5A All-Idaho boys basketball team: Rare multisport star headlines the all-state team
Note: The All-Idaho teams are chosen by each classification’s coaches. The Idaho Statesman hosts the voting process and publishes the results.
PLAYER OF THE YEAR: AUSTIN BOLT, BORAH
Why he is player of the year: The 5A All-Idaho Football Player of the Year earned another award with his relentless motor on the hardwood. He averaged a double-double (19.7 ppg, 12.9 rebounds) for the third straight year to lead Borah to back-to-back state titles.
Coach’s comment: “An unbelievable talent paired with an unparalleled heart. His impact on the game and our team is probably not measurable,” Borah coach Jeremy Dennis said.
What others are saying: “In my 31 years in this business in Idaho, I am not sure I have ever seen anything like Austin Bolt. His competitiveness and his will to win is unmatched,” Lake City coach Jim Winger said.
What’s next: He has signed to play football at Boise State.
TANNER HAYHURST, EAGLE
The 6-6 senior guard led the classification in scoring (21.1 ppg) for the second straight year, moving up to the first team this season. He shot 50.5% from the floor and added 7.8 rebounds and 2.7 assists to become a complete player.
COLBY GENNETT, POST FALLS
The four-year starter ended his career with a trip to the state finals and a second straight appearance on the All-Idaho first team. His size (6-4) made him a matchup nightmare, allowing him to average 15.6 points, 6.9 rebounds and 2.7 steals.
TOWNSEND TRIPPLE, ROCKY MOUNTAIN
The 6-8 senior wing threw down dunks with regularity, but he also showcased deadly range, shooting 42 percent behind the 3-point line. He stuffed the stat sheet with 15.0 points, 6.1 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 1.4 steals and 1.3 blocks a night.
BRITTON BERRETT, RIGBY
Opponents needed to get ready for everything when taking on the Trojans’ 6-4 senior guard. His versatility, craftiness and strong decision-making made him a threat all over the floor. He averaged 20.6 points and 6.4 rebounds.
COACH OF THE YEAR: JEREMY DENNIS, BORAH
The Lions repeated as state champs with just one returning starter and Dennis at the helm.
