PLAYER OF THE YEAR: HAILEY ASTLE, DIETRICH

Why she is player of the year: Teams tried to press the Blue Devils, but the 5-foot-4 senior quickly proved that a fool’s errand. The four-year starting point guard and unquestioned leader had seen it all, and she shredded defenses to the tune of 13.5 points, 3.2 assists and 2.8 steals to lead Dietrich to a state runner-up trophy.

Coach’s comment: “She has a vast knowledge of the game and understands it well. The bigger the game, the more she steps up,” Dietrich coach Rick Astle said.

What others are saying: “Deciding where to pick her up was a challenge, and staying in front of her was almost impossible,” Leadore coach Janet Proulx said.

What’s next: She’s weighing her college options and wants to pursue a physical therapy career.

ROSE STEWART, KENDRICK

The 5-9 senior controlled the paint for the Tigers, averaging a double-double of 14.3 points and 10.3 rebounds for the state consolation champs. The Whitepine League player of the year also posed a threat in transition as a defender (4.0 steals per game).

ISABELLE EPPICH, COUNCIL

The state champs had balanced scoring across all five starters. But whenever they needed a basket, they turned to the 5-10 senior center. Her physicality made her a beast inside, and she finished the season averaging 11.4 points and 6.9 rebounds.

MACKENZIE MACKAY, LEADORE

The 5-6 senior guard rarely left the floor, and that happened only after coaches begged her to take a rest. She knew one way to play — at full speed 100% of the time. That determination led to 16.0 points, 5.3 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 2.4 steals per game.

TAYLIE BOYER, ROCKLAND

A repeat first-team pick, the 5-6 senior wing harassed defenses as a deadly outside shooter in transition and in half-court sets. Give her an inch of space and you’d regret it. She shot 42% behind the arc to score 11.4 points per game, adding 2.3 assists and 3.8 steals.

COACH OF THE YEAR: PAULA TUCKER, COUNCIL

After taking second last year, she led Council to its first state title in boys or girls basketball.
