3A All-Idaho girls basketball team | 2022-2023
Note: The All-Idaho teams are chosen by each classification’s coaches. The Idaho Statesman hosts the voting process and publishes the results.
PLAYER OF THE YEAR: RYLIE EDLEFSEN, SNAKE RIVER
Why she is player of the year: The 5-foot-7 junior led the Panthers to the No. 1 seed at state, then backed it up by bringing home the program’s first title in 10 years. The heady point guard took control of each game, finishing the year with 15.8 points, 2.9 assists and 2.1 steals per game, as well as a Division I offer (Cal State Bakersfield).
Coach’s comment: “She’s a great all-around player — shoots well, plays great ‘D,’ unselfish, can score and creates her own shot when her team needs her to,” Snake River coach Jeff Steadman said.
What others are saying: “She could score at will if she wanted to, but it was her elite-level defense that I witnessed at the state tournament that put her on top,” Gooding coach Derrick Lyons said.
What’s next: She returns to defend the Panthers’ title.
KENNEDY GILLETTE, SUGAR-SALEM
The defending 3A player of the year made the All-Idaho team again. The 5-11 senior guard was 3A’s top scorer (21.2 ppg), and she set the state tournament single-game scoring record with 40 points in her final outing. She has signed with the College of Southern Idaho.
MALIA MILLER, TIMBERLAKE
The freshman made quite a debut, leading the Tigers to the state finals and capturing a league MVP trophy along the way. The 5-5 point guard tied the school’s single-season assist record (130) and finished the season averaging 16.1 points, 5.2 assists and 4.0 steals per game.
PORTER WOOD, TETON
The 5-11 sophomore forward had a nose for the ball, finding ways to sniff out any loose ball or contested rebound. She led Teton to a third-place trophy at state, and she averaged 12.4 points and 10.5 rebounds while shooting 53% from the floor for the year.
MATTIE SHIRTS, WEISER
The 3A Snake River Valley player of the year led the Wolverines to the state consolation trophy for the second straight season. The senior did a bit of everything, including scoring (16.5 ppg), rebounding (7.5 per game) and leading the defense (4.0 steals per game).
COACH OF THE YEAR: JEFF STEADMAN, SNAKE RIVER
He led the Panthers on a 14-game winning streak to close the year with a state title.
