Eagle High’s Ely, Centennial’s Popadics move up minor league ladder
Former Eagle High standout Andrew Ely was named a Midwest League all-star last week. But the 23-year-old won’t get to play in the all-star game as the Chicago Cubs promoted the utility infielder to their High-A affiliate in the Carolina League, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans.
Ely hit .295 with two home runs and 12 RBIs in 44 games with the Low-A South Bend Cubs this season. He’s 2-for-12 in his first three games in Myrtle Beach.
CENTENNIAL’S POPADICS ASSIGNED TO NEW YORK-PENN LEAGUE: Centennial graduate Jon Popadics will begin his second season as a pro Friday with the Hudson Valley Renegades of the short-season A New-York Penn League.
The 23-year-old undrafted second baseman hit .159 in 27 games for Tampa Bay’s club in the rookie-level Appalachian League last summer.
