SKYVIEW 3, COEUR D’ALENE 0: Hawks middle blocker Jill Deatherage hit the ball so hard, it bounced off the gym floor, back over the net and onto the scorer’s table, knocking a metal water bottle to the ground.
It was time to get serious.
After playing a back-and-forth opening set with No. 4 Coeur d’Alene, top-seeded Skyview got down to business, sweeping the Vikings 25-18, 25-14, 25-13 on Friday afternoon to advance to the semifinals of the double-elimination tournament at Capital High School.
Freshman outside hitter Rachel Bower led a trio of Hawks (27-6) with double-digit kills, pounding out 17 kills with four blocks and two digs. Senior outside hitter Bellamie Beus totaled a double-double of 21 digs and 14 kills, and Deatherage had 10 kills and four blocks.
“After the first set, we just all got in the huddle and we were like, ‘Hey, let’s just take it to them. Don’t take the foot off the gas and don’t even let them come up for air,’” Beus said. “And I think we did a really good job of that.”
Skyview takes on three-time defending state champion Madison (35-0) — a team that topped them in the title match last season — at 11 a.m. Saturday at Capital. The winner moves into the championship match, while the loser falls into an elimination game with the chance for a rematch at 4 p.m.
“I anticipate them coming out with a fire like everybody does against us, and we’re just gonna give it right back,” Beus said of the matchup with Madison. “There’s a little bit of a rivalry and some revenge that we’ve got to get. So I think that if we come out with that same fire and we play like we did today, we should be able to do it.”
The Hawks have six state championship banners in all, winning four in a row between 2020 and 2023. Their two most recent titles came in the state’s second-largest classification, while Madison has won at the 6A level the last three seasons.
“We’re going to need to play the best we’ve played,” Skyview coach Kevin Murphy said. “They’re a great team. I mean, obviously, multiple state titles in a row and undefeated. So we’re going to have to play our best game. There’s no question.”
Junior setters Lyla McClure and Chloe Lin combined for 40 assists in Friday’s win, and junior libero Lizzy Bower chipped in 11 digs and three aces.
MADISON 3, TIMBERLINE 0: The Bobcats set up a rematch of last year’s state championship match, dispatching No. 6 Timberline 25-19, 25-11, 25-19.

Now the Bobcats face a Skyview team they beat twice at state last season, winning a five-set battle in the semifinals before scoring a four-set victory in the 2024 championship match.
Madison senior setter Camri Call totaled 49 assists as junior outside hitter Jonnie Folsom (17 kills), senior outside hitter Mia Walsh (13 kills) and senior middle blocker Torey Parker (11 kills) all finished with double-digit kills.
“I felt like we did a really good job for the most part,” Timberline coach Carol Klein said. “We just had a few lapses and let off the gas. That’s really what it came down to.”
Timberline (24-10) then rallied to defeat Rigby 17-25, 25-20, 25-21, 25-23. The Wolves play Rocky Mountain in another loser-out match at 9 a.m. Saturday.
