State volleyball: Skyview, Timberline advance. 7 other Boise-area teams move on
The Idaho high school volleyball state tournaments began Thursday at six locations across the Gem State.
The 6A and 5A tournaments are being hosted in the Boise-area for the first time since 2018.
Nine District Three squads made it through the first round unscathed, including No. 1 Skyview and No. 6 Timberline in the 6A tournament.
IDAHO 6A VOLLEYBALL STATE TOURNAMENT
SKYVIEW 3, BOISE 1: It’s not often that the top-seeded Hawks have a hiccup against an Idaho squad.
But Skyview lost a set for just the second time this season against a Gem State team, ultimately topping No. 8 Boise 25-12, 25-11, 15-25, 25-9 in the first round Thursday at Capital High School.
“To be honest, I think it was kind of humbling for us to come back, because we were playing like we just owned the place,” Skyview middle blocker Jill Deatherage said. “So for us to lose a set, it was like, ‘Hey, we need to lock in and play our game, and want it more than they did.’”
Deatherage led the Hawks in the opening round, totaling a match-high 15 kills with a hitting percentage of .652 to go with two blocks.
Skyview (26-6) cruised in the first two sets, but the upset-minded Brave (22-15) got out to a 4-1 lead in Game 3 and kept the pressure on, pushing their advantage to as much as 10 points.
“I think they’re starting to believe at the right time,” Boise coach Kate Newbery said. “Right now there’s no pressure and nothing to lose. It’s a fun process to see them start believing in themselves and each other.”
After brushing off their third-set loss, the Hawks got three service aces from senior outside hitter Bellamie Beus over the first four points of Game 4, staking a lead they’d never relinquish.
Skyview next plays No. 4 Coeur d’Alene — a 25-16, 29-27, 25-13 winner over No. 5 Rigby — at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Capital. The Hawks finished as the state runner-up last season after winning four state championships in a row between 2020 and 2023.
“We expect it to be tough. These are the best teams in the highest classification,” Skyview coach Kevin Murphy said. “We don’t expect to just roll. We know it’s going to be a dogfight.”
Beus racked up 18 digs, 14 kills and three aces for the Hawks. Freshman outside hitter Rachel Bower added 13 digs, 12 kills and three aces, junior libero Lizzy Bower had 21 digs, and junior setter Chloe Lin chipped in 21 assists.
Senior outside hitter Kennedy Dunn totaled a team-best 10 kills with nine digs for Boise. Senior Kya Hueth and junior Cora Nelson added seven kills apiece, and sophomore setter Kamryn Newberry totaled 14 assists and 13 digs.
Boise draws Rigby in an elimination match at 9 a.m. Friday at Capital.
TIMBERLINE 3, ROCKY MOUNTAIN 2: Between the first and second sets, the Wolves gathered in a circle, including their coaches, and started dancing to Miley Cyrus’ song “Party in the U.S.A.”
That free-spirited nature carried onto the court, helping No. 6 Timberline take down No. 3 Rocky Mountain 25-18, 20-25, 20-25, 25-18, 17-15 in the first round. The Wolves will go for a second straight upset when they face No. 2 Madison in the second round at 3:30 p.m. Friday at Capital.
“We had lunch before our game today, and we really just talked about how much we love each other and how much we want to put our trust in each other,” Timberline junior setter McKenna Satterfield said. “That’ll help us win games like this when it’s tight.”
Satterfield was Timberline’s rock throughout a closely-contested match, finding the hot hand when it mattered most.
Down 15-14 in the final set, Satterfield found junior outside hitter Lily Merservier for a kill off the block, then fed senior Hazel Goetz for a 16-15 edge. The Wolves polished off the match with a block to win the rubber match between the two 6A SIC squads.
“We’ve had a motto the last six weeks called ‘cross the line,’ and we’ve really challenged the girls to step up and don’t be mediocre. Step up and be special,” Timberline coach Carol Klein said. “Sometimes that’s controlling your nerves. Sometimes that’s executing the play. You never know what it is to that individual person. And we’ve asked for some extra defensive effort that’s really come through.”
Satterfield dished out 50 assists to go with 11 digs, four service aces, three kills and one block to pace Timberline. Merservier tallied 20 kills, three digs, two aces and one block, Goetz added 15 kills, seven digs and two blocks, and freshman Jillian Logan had eight kills, eight blocks and one ace.
The Grizzlies (24-7), who take on Eagle in an elimination match at 11 a.m. Friday at Capital, were led by senior outside hitter Chloe Hansen with 20 kills.
MADISON 3, EAGLE 0: The fire alarm at Capital High School went off during the second set of the second-seeded Bobcats’ match against the Mustangs.
Turns out the only thing on fire was Madison.
The defending state champion Bobcats dispatched Eagle 25-12, 25-10, 25-12 to move into the second round, where they’ll face No. 6 Timberline at 3:30 p.m. Friday at Capital.
Senior setter Camri Call totaled 37 assists for Madison, while senior outside hitter Mia Walsh added 13 kills and senior middle blocker Torey Parker chipped in seven kills.
Eagle (20-13), which falls into an elimination match against Rocky Mountain at 11 a.m. Friday, was led by junior setter Brynlee Gneiting with 16 assists. Senior rightside Sophia Giles had four kills, and sophomore middle blocker Kiley Newberry and senior middle blocker Madison Jones had three kills apiece.
