6A, 5A SIC district golf champions crowned. See who is going to state next week

Reid Hoppock hit his driver into the water on hole No. 10. But the Boise senior’s confidence didn’t waver.

After taking a drop, Hoppock hit his third shot just short of the green, then chipped in for a birdie on his way to the 6A District Three boys golf individual championship Wednesday at River Birch Golf Course.

Hoppock shot a 6-under 66 for a three-stroke win over Mountain View junior Mason McGee (69).

“I’ve played pretty good so far this high school season,” Hoppock said. “But it’s probably the best golf I’ve played in over a year. It just feels really good to finally put a really good round together and be able to win a tournament.”

Hoppock took second at last year’s district tournament by three strokes and then fell ill during the state tournament the following week, finishing in a tie for eighth.

This year’s state tournament will be Oct. 9-10 at RedHawk in Nampa, where Boise will go for its third team title in the past four seasons.

While Hoppock took home medalist honors Wednesday, the Brave missed out on a second straight district championship by a single stroke.

Mountain View edged Boise 293 to 294. Timberline (297) and Eagle (306) also qualified for state.

The district title is the third in program history for the Mavericks, adding to championships in 2019 and 2004. Mountain View coaches Gary Larsen and Kelly Bartlett have been around for all of it.

“The camaraderie with the kids is what won it for us,” Larsen said. “They really support each other and enjoy each other. Plus the perseverance and the work that they’ve done this year, it’s been wonderful.”

McGee, who carded a 3-under 69, helped secure the victory for the Mavericks.

As their last golfer on the course in the final group, McGee tapped in for par on No. 18, delivering Mountain View the single-stroke win.

“He’s been our silent leader and team captain for the last couple of years,” Larsen said. “He showed today when things got rough, he stayed with us. He finished 3-under par, and that won it for us, so I’m really proud of him.”

Three of Mountain View’s golfers finished among the top 6, with sophomore Kaden Gempler in third (72) and junior Porter Bickford in a tie for sixth (74). Junior Gavin Mlynarik (78) and sophomore Beckham Hatfield (80) will also represent the Mavericks at state.

Mountain View has never won a state championship in golf, but the Mavericks hope to rectify that next week.

“I think we have a great shot at winning state this year, and we have in past years, but we just didn’t get it done,” McGee said. “But I think this year we will.”

ROCKY MOUNTAIN SWEEPS GIRLS TITLES

Maggie Urian carded a 77 to win claim medalist honors by two strokes, leading the Rocky Mountain girls to their sixth straight 6A District Three championship Tuesday at Scotch Pines Golf Course in Payette.

Urian held off Owyhee’s Eliana Cho (79) by two strokes, but the Grizzlies (322) easily ran away with the team championship by 38 strokes over Eagle (360). Mountain View (365) and Borah (378) also qualified for state as a team.

All four of Rocky Mountain’s scoring golfers finished among the top 7, with Zoe Moore (80) in a tie for third, Natalie Nichenko (82) in sixth and Adel Peterson (83) in a tie for seventh. Ellianna Hoopes (88) will also represent the Grizzlies at state, where they have won four straight championships.

BISHOP KELLY’S CARTER WINS 4TH DISTRICT TITLE

Cara Carter etched her name into the record books Tuesday, shooting a 1-under 71 at TimberStone Golf Course to become the first golfer in 5A Southern Idaho Conference history to capture four district championships.

The Wisconsin commit left little doubt with her final district title, finishing 14 shots ahead of Emmett’s Raegan Larson in second place.

“She has defined Bishop Kelly golf,” Knights coach Michelle Judy said. “Truly, she has defined what a champion is with her work ethic, the time she puts in.

“I’ve never seen an athlete like her.”

The senior started Tuesday on fire, reaching 2-under through eight holes. A couple of bogeys set her back to par before finishing the round with her third birdie on No. 18.

Carter credited her chipping game for Tuesday’s sub-par round, noting she hit the pin on the course’s first par-5 hole before tapping in for birdie. But ever the competitor, she felt she left a few birdie opportunities slip away.

Carter didn’t learn about her place in history until after Tuesday’s award ceremony. The last golfer in SIC history to win four straight district titles was Centennial’s Andrea Baxter (1990-93). The league only crowned a single champion until the state created the 5A classification in 2001.

“I’m just really happy I did that,” Carter said. “It sounds really cool.”

Carter’s history-making round also carried a young Knights team to their sixth straight district title. Bishop Kelly shot a combined score of 349 (+61) to finish 17 strokes ahead of Middleton, the district’s second-place finisher and only other automatic state qualifier.

Ava Smith led the Vikings with a round of 87, and Nampa’s Dear Phangon clinched the district’s final individual state berth by finishing in a three-way tie for sixth place at 93.

BK BOYS CAPTURE 5TH STRAIGHT TITLE

The Knights cruised to another district championship at TimberStone, shooting a combined 2-over 290 to edge second-place Middleton by 29 strokes.

Bishop Kelly swept the top three spots on the individual leaderboard. Junior Aidan Szentanai fired a 3-under 69 for his second district title in three years. Charlie Hilvers finished 3 strokes back at even par in second place, and Dan Moodie took third at 1-over 73.

The four-time defending state champs head into next week’s state tournament at Caldwell’s Purple Sage as the favorite yet again. Only Emmett’s Russell Larson kept the Knights from taking the top four spots with a round of 74.

Middleton (319) and Skyview (342) clinched the 5A SIC’s final two team state tournament berths by finishing second and third, respectively.
