Idaho state volleyball tournaments: Nine Boise-area teams victorious in opening round

Boise-area teams won nine first-round matches Thursday at the Idaho high school state volleyball tournaments.

Among those winners were defending state champions Skyview (6A), Fruitland (4A), Melba (3A) and Horseshoe Bend (1A).

Here’s a breakdown of what transpired on the opening day of the double-elimination tournaments:

6A STATE TOURNAMENT

OWYHEE 3, COEUR D’ALENE 0: The Storm made quick work of the Vikings in their state tournament opener Thursday at Mountain America Center in Idaho Falls, rolling to a 25-11, 25-19, 25-15 victory.

Senior setter Shaynee McWilliams dished out 26 assists to go with 10 digs, five blocks and five aces for Owyhee (26-4), while sophomore Reese Meier had a team-best nine kills, 15 digs, four blocks and two aces, and junior Logan Pease added six blocks.

The No. 3 Storm take on No. 2 Madison in the second round at 1:30 p.m. Friday.

MADISON 3, ROCKY MOUNTAIN 0: The No. 7 Grizzlies couldn’t keep up with the No. 2 Bobcats in an opening-round 25-19, 25-13, 25-17 loss.

Rocky Mountain (26-11) plays a loser-out contest against Coeur d’Alene at 9 a.m. Friday. Individual stats were not reported.

SKYVIEW 3, RIGBY 0: The four-time defending state champion Hawks needed little more than an hour to dispatch the eighth-seeded Trojans, winning 25-17, 25-15, 25-14.

Kentucky commit Bellamie Beus, a junior outside hitter, totaled 16 kills, five digs and one block, while Brazilian foreign exchange student Nina Ferraro guided the offense with 33 assists. Sophomore Lizzie Bower added 10 digs and eight kills, sophomore Berkleigh Minnick had seven kills, and junior libero Kensie Seward contributed 11 digs.

Skyview (25-6) plays Centennial in the second round at 3:30 p.m. Friday.

CENTENNIAL 3, EAGLE 2: It took five sets to determine a winner in their first meeting this season, and their tournament matchup was no different.

The No. 4 Patriots topped SIC foe Eagle 21-25, 25-12, 27-25, 23-25, 18-16 to set up a second-round match with Skyview. The Hawks have won both previous meetings this season.

No. 5 Eagle (22-7) plays an elimination game against Rigby at 11 a.m. Friday.

Centennial (30-4-1) senior outside hitter Eliana Ti’a racked up 35 kills — with a .309 hitting percentage — plus 20 digs and three blocks against Eagle. Senior middle blocker Daelyn Harris had 13 kills, a .393 hitting percentage and eight blocks, and senior setter Liberty Ipsen collected 27 assists, 12 digs and four aces.

Individual stats were not reported for the Mustangs.

5A STATE TOURNAMENT

IDAHO FALLS 3, COLUMBIA 0: The District Three champion Wildcats fell 25-9, 25-16, 25-17 in the first round to the No. 3 seed Tigers on Thursday at Mountain America Center in Idaho Falls.

Columbia (19-9-1) will try to stay alive in a loser-out match against No. 7 Wood River at 9 a.m. Friday. Individual stats were not reported.

BONNEVILLE 3, MIDDLETON 1: The No. 4 Bees held off the No. 5 Vikings 25-21, 18-25, 25-17, 25-13 in a first-round contest.

Middleton (28-9-1) can keep its season alive with a victory over No. 1 Lakeland in a loser-out match at 11 a.m. Friday. Individual stats were not reported.

4A STATE TOURNAMENT

FRUITLAND 3, BONNERS FERRY 1: The defending state champion Grizzlies dropped their opening set of the state tournament at Lake City High School in Coeur d’Alene, but it was smooth sailing from there.

No. 2 Fruitland rallied to defeat the No. 7 Badgers 19-25, 25-19, 25-19, 25-13, setting up a second-round match against No. 3 Kimberly at 1:30 p.m. Friday.

Junior Brooke Hardy pounded out an impressive 30 kills for the Grizzlies (26-4-2) to go with 13 digs and five blocks. Sophomore Eva Wall had 15 digs and 12 kills, and senior setter Aleksi Drollinger registered 30 assists.

COLE VALLEY CHRISTIAN 3, WEISER 1: After splitting their regular-season matches in the SRV, the No. 4 Chargers won the rubber match over the No. 5 Wolverines 25-19, 23-25, 27-25, 25-18.

Cole Valley (16-9-2) draws top-ranked Bear Lake in the second round at 3:30 p.m. Friday, while Weiser (21-13-1) plays an elimination game against South Fremont at 11 a.m.

Individual stats were not reported for either team.

3A STATE TOURNAMENT

AMBROSE 3, RIRIE 1: The No. 3 Archers outlasted the No. 6 Bulldogs 25-18, 25-23, 21-25, 25-23 on Thursday at Idaho’s Memorial Gym in Moscow.

Ambrose can earn a spot in the semifinals with a victory over No. 2 Malad at 1:30 p.m. Friday.

Anna Campbell paced the Archers with 15 kills and five aces, Brooklyn Sawyer totaled 10 kills and five digs, and Ella Sielaff had 14 assists and four digs.

MELBA 3, FIRTH 0: The top-seeded and two-time defending state champion Mustangs leapfrogged the No. 8 Cougars 25-14, 25-15, 25-11.

Melba (25-3-3) takes on Nampa Christian for a spot in the semifinals at 3:30 p.m. Friday. The Mustangs have swept the Trojans in both meetings this season.

Senior Tariah Carter had a team-high 24 kills and 12 digs for the Mustangs, junior setter Ellie Johnson totaled 39 assists, eight digs and four kills, sophomore Joelle Kelly had 15 kills and 23 digs, and junior Ali Dillbeck added 13 digs.

NAMPA CHRISTIAN 3, GRANGEVILLE 0: District Three teams went unbeaten on the first day with the No. 4 Trojans’ 25-14, 25-17, 25-16 sweep of the No. 5 Bulldogs in the final match of the day.

Nampa Christian (17-8-1) was led by Kailey Reeves, who hit .416 with 12 kills, and Lexi Douthit with 24 assists.

2A STATE TOURNAMENT

BUTTE COUNTY 3, LIBERTY CHARTER 0: The No. 2 Pirates dominated the No. 7 Patriots in a 25-6, 25-16, 25-9 sweep Thursday at Jerome High School.

Liberty Charter (15-10) faces Prairie in a loser-out match at 9 a.m. Friday. Individual stats were not reported.

OAKLEY 3, WILDER 0: The Wildcats lost their tournament opener 25-15, 25-11, 25-14 at the hands of the No. 4 Hornets.

Wilder (16-2), which is seeded fifth, must defeat No. 8 Genesis Prep in a loser-out match at 11 a.m. Friday to keep its season going. Individual stats were not reported.

1A STATE TOURNAMENT

HORSESHOE BEND 3, COUNCIL 0: The Mustangs beat their 1A Long Pin rivals for the fifth time this season, cruising to a 25-20, 25-14, 25-15 sweep Thursday at Canyon Ridge High School in Twin Falls.

Second-ranked and defending state champion Horseshoe Bend (28-4) takes on No. 3 Mackay in the second round at 1:30 p.m. Friday. Council (15-9-1) will try to extend its season in a loser-out match against Carey at 9 a.m.

The Mustangs were led by senior outside hitter Aubree Zimmer with 17 digs, 13 kills, three blocks, one ace and one assist. Senior setter Aliyah Meyer had 18 assists, 18 digs, four kills, four aces and two blocks, and senior rightside Ashlyn Wolsleben contributed 10 digs, six kills and one assist.
