Idaho state soccer tournaments: 6A boys, girls titles will come down to Boise-area teams
Five Boise-area teams won semifinal games Friday at the Idaho boys and girls soccer state tournaments.
Boise and Rocky Mountain will represent the SIC in both 6A finals, while the Vallivue boys advanced to the 5A championship.
6A GIRLS SOCCER STATE TOURNAMENT
BOISE 0, OWYHEE 0 (BOISE 4-2 PKs): The Brave got a bit of revenge in the state semifinals.
After losing to the Storm on penalty kicks in last year’s state championship game, Boise (14-2-2) returned the favor to return to the title game.
The No. 2 Brave will now try for their second state championship in the past three seasons Saturday against top-seed Rocky Mountain at War Memorial Field in Sandpoint. Boise and Rocky Mountain played to a 1-1 tie on Sept. 28.
“They just have so much pride and heart in everything that they do,” Boise coach Ali Leonard said. “As a team and as a unit, it’s a really great group to work with.”
Boise senior goalkeeper Juliette Langlet made four saves in regulation and three in overtime. In the penalty round, Langlet stopped one shot with her foot and ricocheted another off the cross bar, and also converted on a PK of her own.
Senior Catherine Carpenter, freshman Josie Reedy and senior Maizy Kluksdal also connected on PKs for the Brave.
ROCKY MOUNTAIN 2, TIMBERLINE 0: Junior forward Campbell Wilson scored both goals to lift the Grizzlies to a semifinal victory over the Wolves.
Rocky Mountain (17-1-2) hasn’t lost since a season-opening defeat at the hands of Lone Peak (Utah) and has just two ties during a 19-game unbeaten streak. The Grizzlies have won four state championships in program history, including three straight from 2018 to 2020.
No further details were available from Friday’s semifinal.
Timberline (13-5-3) plays Owyhee in the third-place game Saturday.
BISHOP KELLY 7, MADISON 1: The Knights (13-5-2) bounced back from a first-round loss with a dominant win over the Bobcats. Junior Caitlin Staats and sophomore Kenzie Hill each scored two goals with an assist for BK, and Erin DiVittorio, Kate Jaques and Brooke Hall added one goal apiece. The Knights will face Lake City for the consolation trophy Saturday.
6A BOYS SOCCER STATE TOURNAMENT
ROCKY MOUNTAIN 2, BISHOP KELLY 1: The Grizzlies are headed back to the state championship game hoping for a different outcome.
Rocky Mountain (16-1-2) rallied from a 1-0 deficit at halftime with a pair of goals from senior Rylan McPherson in the second half. Juniors Drake Rutz and Camden Shepherd each had an assist, and junior goalkeeper Paul Mercadante made five saves.
“As long as there’s time on the clock, we’re gonna believe we can get the result we need to get,” Rocky Mountain coach Bill Taylor said. “No one panics. We just go after it until the clock runs out.”
McPherson tied the game in the 59th minute, and then notched the game-winner in the 66th when Shepherd fed a through ball to McPherson, who beat the BK keeper one-on-one.
The Grizzlies lost 3-1 to Timberline in last year’s title game. They’ll face Boise in Saturday’s championship at Coeur d’Alene High School. The two teams also met in last week’s district championship, with Rocky winning 3-2 in overtime.
“I think it will be a very competitive match,” Taylor said, “and one that I think both teams deserve to be in.”
Senior Mason Schweitzer scored for BK (14-4-3), which plays Owyhee for the third-place trophy Saturday.
BOISE 2, OWYHEE 1: The second-seeded Brave (16-3-1) returned to the title game for the second time in the past three seasons with a semifinal victory over the Storm.
Senior midfielder Alex Hoefer opened the scoring for the Brave near the end of the first half, and sophomore C.J. Zambukos extended Boise’s lead to 2-0 in the 65th. Both goals were unassisted.
Senior goalkeeper Travis Bartich made three saves for Boise, which last won it all in 2020.
“It’s been four years since we won (state),” Boise coach Mike Darrow said. “So getting back to (the title game) and having the opportunity is what we’ve been trying to do all year.”
Owyhee scored on a corner kick with about 8 minutes left in regulation.
MOUNTAIN VIEW 4, LAKE CITY 0: The Mavericks (11-10-2) earned a spot in the consolation championship with a shutout of the Timberwolves. Sophomore goalkeeper Ju Ju Pemany stopped all five shots he faced to earn the clean sheet, while Jayten Duppong, Ammar Kapidzic, Amjed Salim and Jace Obenchain each found the back of the net.
5A GIRLS SOCCER STATE TOURNAMENT
SANDPOINT 1, MIDDLETON 1 (SANDPOINT 4-3 PKs): The Vikings lost a tight contest in the semifinals to the defending state champion Bulldogs at Hillcrest High School in Idaho Falls.
Senior Addie McCallister scored the lone goal for Middleton (16-2-1) off an assist from fellow senior Elsie Wyatt, while McCallister, Brinklee Steele and Tyleigh Quarders each converted on PK tries.
Middleton, which entered as the No. 1 seed, will now play No. 2 Lewiston in the third-place match Saturday. Sandpoint draws Pocatello in the championship.
5A BOYS SOCCER STATE TOURNAMENT
VALLIVUE 1, IDAHO FALLS 1 (VALLIVUE 3-2 PKs): The Falcons won a shootout against the Tigers at Bonneville High School in Idaho Falls.
