Idaho soccer state tournaments: Boise-area teams dominate opening round with 12 victories
Treasure Valley teams cleaned up on the first day of the Idaho boys and girls soccer state tournaments, going a combined 12-4 — with two of those losses coming to other Boise-area teams.
The banner day set up all-Treasure Valley semifinals Friday at the 6A boys tournament in Coeur d’Alene and the 6A girls tournament in Sandpoint.
The Middleton girls, Vallivue boys, Fruitland girls and McCall-Donnelly boys also advanced to their tournament semifinals from Southwest Idaho.
6A GIRLS SOCCER STATE TOURNAMENT
OWYHEE 2, LAKE CITY 1: Ashley Wright and Alexa Zierenberg combined for both goals to lead the defending state champs into the semifinals.
Zierenberg first sprung Wright with a through ball in the 20th minute, and Wright banged home a left-footed shot. Wright then returned the favor in the 60th minute, finding Zierenberg with a cross at the top of the 18-yard box. Zierenberg took one touch before beating the goalkeeper to the right post.
Lake City (12-4-2) threatened with Katherine Kovatch’s goal in the 77th minute. But Owyhee (12-4-2) hung on to set up a rematch with Boise in the semifinals. Owyhee beat the Brave in a shootout last year in the state finals.
BOISE 1, HIGHLAND 0, OT: Sophomore Olivia Lamb one-timed a cross out of the air and into the net in the 84th minute for a golden goal, sending the Brave (13-2-2) to the state semifinals.
Avery Morris started the decisive moment, taking a throw-in and beating two defenders down the right flank. Her cross inched over the head of a Highland defender, finding a streaking Lamb 10 yards from goal. Lamb’s one-timer had enough pace to squeak through the hands of the Highland (12-5-1) goalkeeper.
Meanwhile, Marin MacKenzie and Juliette Langlet combined for five saves for Boise’s 11th shutout of the season.
ROCKY MOUNTAIN 4, MADISON 0: Maddie Jakobson, Dilynn Revelle, Teagan Weigt and Van Staley all scored as the top-seeded Grizzlies (16-1-2) stretched their unbeaten streak to 18 games.
Jakobson put Rocky Mountain on the board in the 26th minute when she found herself open at the back post on a second cross off her own corner kick. Revelle then made it 2-0 at halftime after splitting two defenders and lofting a shot over the goalkeeper.
Weigt added a header in the 65th minute, and Staley buried a shot from 30 yards out in the 72nd minute as Rocky Mountain advanced to face Timberline in an all-SIC semifinal round Friday.
TIMBERLINE 2, BISHOP KELLY 1: Morgan Woods scored the game winner in the 65th minute, pouncing on a bouncing ball in the box off a Francesca Truax corner kick to send the No. 4 Wolves to the state semifinals.
Truax put Timberline up early in the 25th minute off an assist from Reese Vachek. Bishop Kelly then tied it in the 45th minute on an Erin DiVittorio strike before Woods delivered the decisive blow for Timberline (13-4-3) 20 minutes later.
No. 5 Bishop Kelly (12-5-2) fell into the consolation bracket, where it will face Madison on Friday.
6A BOYS SOCCER STATE TOURNAMENT
OWYHEE 2, LAKE CITY 1: Graham Herzog scored a pair of first-half goals to lift the Storm to their first state tournament victory in their first tip to state.
Herzog got Owyhee on the board first when he tapped in a cross from Owen Selby at the back post. He added his second goal during a scramble in the box, punching in a rebound.
Lake City made it a one-goal game in the 48th minute. But sixth-seeded Owyhee (13-5-2) hung on for the final 32 minutes to advance and face Boise in the semifinals Friday.
BOISE 4, MOUNTAIN VIEW 0: The Brave struggled to put away a few early opportunities, but Boise buried three goals in the second half to run away with a first-round victory.
Noah Prince scored twice, and Baraka Dayi and Meyer smith each added a goal for Boise (15-3-1). Travis Bartich made two saves for the shutout.
The Brave will take on Owyhee in the semifinals. Boise is 5-0-0 all-time against the Storm.
ROCKY MOUNTAIN 5, CANYON RIDGE 0: Rylan McPherson converted a penalty kick in the 5th minute, and it was all Rocky Mountain from there.
Garrison Torres made it 2-0 off a set piece, Gabe Hernandez brought the score to 3-0 at halftime, and Taulant Hyseni scored twice in the second half for the final margin.
Paul Mercadante stopped three shots to preserve the shutout for the top-seeded Grizzlies (16-1-2), who face Bishop Kelly in the semifinals Friday.
BISHOP KELLY 2, THUNDER RIDGE 1, 2OT: Brayden Thomas sank a golden-goal penalty kick in the 97th minute to send the Knights to the semifinals in their first season back in the state’s top classification.
Fifth-seeded Thunder Ridge (16-2-1) took the first lead on Kaden Palmer’s 15th minute goal. Fourth-seeded Bishop Kelly (14-3-3) then forced overtime when Diego Nava one-timed a cross from Thomas out of the air and into the net from 6 yards out in the 65th minute.
The game appeared headed to a shootout until Bishop Kelly’s Mason Schweitzer beat his defender and was clipped as he tried to deliver a cross inside the 18-yard box. That’s all Thomas needed for the walk-off goal.

MIDDLETON 6, IDAHO FALLS 1: Elsie Wyatt recorded a hat trick, and Brinklie Steele, Addie McCallister and Tyleigh Quarders each added goals as the top-seeded Vikings rolled to a first-round win at Hillcrest High in Idaho Falls.
