PLAYER OF THE YEAR: KRISTIN WEMHOFF, PRAIRIE

Why she is player of the year: A first-team selection last year, the 5-foot-6 point guard caps her career with the top award. The senior wreaked havoc on both ends of the court, racking up 18.8 points, 7.7 rebounds, 5.0 assists, 6.0 steals and 1.1 blocks per game to lead the Pirates to a third-place finish at state.

Coach’s comment: “This kid was a game changer, energetic and 100% full of heart,” Prairie coach Lori Mader said.

What others are saying: “Kristen is a great defender. Against us at state, she took the game over in the second half with her scoring. She was a threat we were unable to shut down,” Greenleaf coach Randy Fisk said.

What’s next: She holds an offer from Walla Walla Community College but remains uncommitted.

CAROLINE SCHUMANN, RAFT RIVER

The 5-11 senior center led the Trojans to the state title, dominating the paint with 14.0 points and 7.0 rebounds per game. But she also had a smooth shooting stroke, strong handles and the vision to punish opponents if they devoted too many resources to defending her.

JAELYN MCCORMACK-MARKS, LAPWAI

The freshman burst onto the scene and captured the Whitepine League’s player of the year award. The 5-7 point guard has a quick release that forces defenses to get out on her early. She finished with 14.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 4.8 steals per game.

SHAE OLSEN, GREENLEAF

The future College of Idaho soccer player led the classification with 22.5 points per game despite finishing the season with a broken hand. The 5-6 senior forward even shot with her left hand for three games, but she kept producing and led the Grizzlies to state.

JORDYN MCCORMACK-MARKS, LAPWAI

The silky-smooth point guard, and Jaelyn’s older sister, made the first team for the second straight year. The 5-9 junior did everything for the Wildcats, getting to the hoop at will and shutting down passing lanes to average 10.3 points, 1.9 assists, 2.2 steals and 1.2 blocks.

COACH OF THE YEAR: BART DETERS, RAFT RIVER

He led the Trojans to the first state title in program history, topping rival Oakley in the finals.
