PLAYER OF THE YEAR: KIYA MCAFFEE, BUTTE COUNTY
Why she is player of the year: The Pirates could turn to their 5-8 senior point guard for anything and watch her take care of business. She broke presses, slashed defenses, hit midrange jumpers and was a lockdown defender, averaging 14.1 points, 5.5 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 3.0 steals as Butte County captured the third-place trophy at state.
Coach’s comment: “Kiya is that person capable of playing any position on the court and will excel as she does it,” Butte County coach Carla Hansen said.
What others are saying: “Kiya had a great senior season. She has been a force in our conference for the last four years,” Grace coach Kyle Christensen said.
What’s next: She’ll try to defend her state shot put title this spring.
GRACE SOBOTTA, LAPWAI
The 5-7 senior wing didn’t always light up the scoreboard. But she kept the state champs on pace with her next-level court vision, finding opponents in the right spot for an easy bucket. She averaged 8.4 points, 5.1 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 3.5 steals.
KRISTEN WEMHOFF, PRAIRIE
The Whitepine League’s player of the year carried the Pirates to a second-place finish at state through her desire and determination. An unquestioned leader, the 5-6 junior point guard stuffed the stat sheet with 13.2 points, 5.6 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 5.1 steals per game.
JORDYN MCCORMACK-MARKS, LAPWAI
The Wildcats turned the point guard role over to the 5-10 sophomore, and she more than lived up to expectations. She slashed through defenses at will and also served as a defensive ace, finishing with 10.9 points, 4.9 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 4.3 steals per game.
SAYQ’IS GREENE, LAPWAI
The 5-8 senior wing led a deep Wildcat lineup in scoring at 12.5 points per game. Her quick release and deep range forced defenses to stretch out to meet her. But she wasn’t just a pure shooter, adding 5.3 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 2.5 steals per game.
COACH OF THE YEAR: ADA MARKS, LAPWAI
The Wildcats won three state tournament games by an average of 41 points for their 11th title.
