Vote now for the Treasure Valley athletes of the week (Dec. 16 to 22)

The high school sports season has hit its winter break. But it won’t last too long as the schedule ramps back up this weekend.

In the meantime, it’s time for the latest Treasure Valley Athletes of the Week contest sponsored by Edmark Toyota.

Polls close at noon Wednesday. Read about all the candidates and their accomplishments below.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Jayden Glaze, Skyview: The sophomore averaged 14.75 points, 3.75 rebounds and 3 steals as the Hawks went 3-1 last week, including sweeping all three games at the Elite Eight Tournament in Nampa.

Zoe Peterson, Riverstone: The senior captain averaged a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds in wins over Ambrose and Gem State. She’s averaging a double-double through seven games this season.

Mary Meeks, North Star Charter: The junior dropped 30 points, nine rebounds, six steals and five assists in the Huskies’ 57-34 win over Idaho City.

Taylor Pooley, Centennial: The senior scored a career-high 21 points to lead the Patriots to a 57-50 win over Skyview. She shot 75 percent from the floor and drained six 3-pointers on the night.

Kyler Nitzel, Cascade: The freshman erupted for 34 points in the Ramblers’ 65-19 win over Four Rivers, Oregon.

Gracie Dines, Homedale: The senior point guard averaged 10 points, four steals and two rebounds to lead the Trojans to a fourth-place finish at the Elite Eight Tournament in Nampa.

Maddie Cooke, Cole Valley Christian: The senior scored 22 points to lead the Chargers to a 55-47 win over Melba, snapping the Mustangs’ 42-game conference win streak.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Donavon Estrada, Nampa: The senior was named the MVP of the Elite Eight Tournament in Nampa after averaging 19 points, six rebounds and six assists as the Bulldogs swept the tourney. He also hit a halfcourt buzzer-beater to lead Nampa to a 42-39 over Homedale in the championship game.

Sean Austin, Kuna: The junior averaged 23 points and nine rebounds to lead the Kavemen to a 3-0 record at the Warhawk Christmas Tournament at Ridgevue.

Nick Liebich, Riverstone: The junior erupted for 37 points to lead the Otters to a 64-43, first-round win over Salmon River at the Truckstop.com Tournament at the College of Idaho.

Austin Bolt, Borah: The senior tallied a double-double of 17 points and 13 rebounds in a 58-42 win over Centennial, then followed it with another double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds in a 52-32 win over Mountain View.

Tanner Hayhurst, Eagle: The senior had 25 points and five rebounds in a 66-54 win over Timberline. Then he added 16 points in a 61-28 win over Centennial as the Mustangs improved to 6-2.

Townsend Tripple, Rocky Mountain: The senior averaged 15.3 points and 10.7 rebounds as the Grizzlies won three league games to remain undefeated in the 5A SIC.

Nick Wolter, Bishop Kelly: The senior racked up 18 points, eight rebounds and five steals to lead the Knights to a 64-48 win over Canyon Ridge.

WRESTLING

Dante Roggio, Kuna: The junior took down two defending state champions on his way to an 8-0 record at the elite Intermountain Wasatch Duals in Heber City, Utah.

Nico Rodriguez, Columbia: The sophomore posted a 12-0 record for the week, rolling through duals against Caldwell, Minico and Pocatello, and then an undefeated run at the High Country Conference Duals in Eastern Idaho.

Josiah Lara, Skyview: The senior heavyweight finished as the runner-up at the Tri-State Invitational.

Abe Turpen, Capital: The undefeated senior rolled to a 195-pound title at the Wiley Dobbs Invite at Canyon Ridge, winning the championship match with a pin in 28 seconds.
