Ashton Jeanty caps off bumpy rookie NFL season with a Raiders franchise record

Former Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty didn’t experience the most joyful start to his NFL career.

Used to winning as a Bronco, the Heisman Trophy runner-up was drafted sixth overall by the Las Vegas Raiders last year and endured a 3-14 rookie season.

The Raiders’ offense finished dead last in the NFL for yards per game, and the dysfunctional franchise will have the No. 1 pick in the draft after sporting the league’s worst record. Las Vegas promptly fired first-year head coach Pete Carroll on Monday, less than 24 hours after the end of the regular season. Carroll himself fired offensive coordinator Chip Kelly in November.

On an individual level, Jeanty had good games and bad, and he really couldn’t have done much more to help his case as one of the best young talents in the league. And he added a big franchise record next to his name on Sunday afternoon.

Jeanty rushed for 87 yards, to go with seven receiving yards, in the Raiders’ 14-12 win over Kansas City, bringing his yards from scrimmage total for the season to 1,321. That gave him the rookie record for single-season scrimmage yards with the Raiders, overtaking Josh Jacobs’ total of 1,316 from 2019.

What makes that record especially impressive? Jeanty broke it playing behind one of the worst offensive lines in the NFL.

Jeanty ended the season with 346 receiving yards on 55 catches and 975 rushing yards on 266 carries. Of those 975 rushing yards, a whopping 830 came after contact.

According to Statmuse, Jeanty ended the season first in total scrimmage yards among rookies (1,321), tied for first in receiving touchdowns by a rookie RB (5), second in receiving yards for rookie RBs (346), and second in total touchdowns by a rookie (10).
