Boise State hires safeties coach from Midwest who is a four-time Broyles Award nominee

Former Ball State defensive coordinator Tyler Stockton will coach safeties and serve as co-defensive coordinator at Boise State, head coach Spencer Danielson announced Thursday.

Stockton spent the past five years at Ball State and was nominated for the Broyles Award in each of the past four seasons. The award is given to the top assistant coach in the country.

“Tyler Stockton brings an impressive resume to Boise State, and I expect him to fit right in with our program,” Danielson said in a statement. “His time as a player at Notre Dame and his experience coaching shows that he understands what is required to win championships and bowl games. I look forward to his imprint on our secondary as we continue to uphold the standard at Boise State.”

Stockton is expected to sign a two-year contract that will pay him $260,000 a year, according to his material time sheet. The deal is subject to approval by the Idaho State Board of Education.

Under Stockton’s direction, Ball State ranked No. 20 in the nation in total defense (315.8 yards a game), No. 22 in rush defense (111.58 yards per game) and No. 33 in pass defense (204.3 yards a game) this season.

“I am very excited to come to Boise State and join the special program that Spencer Danielson is building,” Stockton said in a statement. “He has an incredible vision for this program, one that will lead it to championships while teaching with love and care for the players. Boise State’s fans are the best in the country, and they impact games unlike any other school.

“My family and I are so excited to become a part of Bronco Nation and to not only join, but contribute, to this community.”

Stockton joins defensive coordinator Erik Chinander, offensive coordinator Bush Hamdan, wide receivers coach Matt Miller, running backs coach James Montgomery, edge coach Jabril Frazier and offensive line coach Tim Keane as confirmed members of Danielson’s staff.

Danielson said Wednesday that negotiations are ongoing with tight ends coach Nate Potter and cornerbacks coach/special teams coordinator Demario Warren. Both were made available to the media on Wednesday and said they plan to stay on staff. That would just leave Danielson with the task of hiring a new linebackers coach.
