The offseason coaching shuffle for Boise State football continued Friday with the hiring of Erik Chinander as defensive line coach and defensive run game coordinator.

Chinander replaces Frank Maile, who left to pursue other opportunities.

“Erik coaches an aggressive style of defense that fits well as we continue to grow our program,” Boise State coach Andy Avalos said in a news release. “He brings a ton of experience at the college and pro level and I can’t wait for him to get to know our players.”

Chinander, a two-time Broyles Award nominee, joins Boise State after spending the past five seasons at Nebraska (2018-22). He has previously coached at UCF (2016-17), Oregon (2014-15 and 2010-12), Northern Iowa (2004-09) and Ellsworth (Iowa) Community College (2003). He also spent 2013 with the Philadelphia Eagles. He was named a top 25 recruiter by Rivals in 2021.

Chinander served as the defensive coordinator at both UCF and Nebraska, and was the outside linebackers coach at Oregon in 2014 and 2015.

UCF ranked 18th and second nationally in takeaways during Chinander’s two seasons in Orlando, while Nebraska finished 36th nationally in scoring defense in 2021.

Chinander served as the assistant defensive line coach for the NFC East champion Eagles the one season he was there. At Northern Iowa, he coached tight ends and helped the Panthers win three conference titles and make three appearances in the FCS playoffs.

Chinander is set to make $220,000 his first year (through February 29, 2024), and that will bump up to $320,000 in Year 2 (March 1, 2024 to February 28, 2025), according to his material term sheet.
