A former pass rusher at Boise State will coach the Broncos’ current crop of edge rushers.

Jabril Frazier has been promoted to full-time edge coach, Boise State coach Andy Avalos announced on Thursday. Frazier has spent the past three years as a graduate assistant, and he helped Avalos coach the edge rushers after Kelly Poppinga left to take a job at BYU.

“Jabril has earned this opportunity through countless hours of hard work and dedication,” Avalos said in a statement. “As a former Bronco student-athlete, he knows our program inside and out. I am excited for him.”

Frazier had the support of several players, including defensive tackle Scott Matlock and safety JL Skinner, both of whom went to Twitter on Wednesday to advocate for him to get the job.

Frazier played the same position that he’ll now coach. It was called STUD back then. Now it’s called edge, but it’s the same deal — a hybrid defensive end-outside linebacker who is as likely to drop back in coverage as to rush the passer.

Frazier will make $120,000 in his first season as a full-time assistant, according to his material term sheet.

Frazier was a two-time All-Mountain West pick during his playing career. He earned first-team honors as a redshirt senior in 2018 and finished his career with 18 sacks and 24.5 tackles for loss.

Broncos hire strength coach

The Boise State football team also hired a new head strength coach on Thursday.

Ben Hilgart will replace Reid Kagy as director of sports performance, Avalos announced.

Hilgart has more than 30 years of experience as a strength coach and has made stops at Arizona, Arizona State, New Mexico, Ohio State, UTEP and Western Illinois.

“Ben has a long history of helping develop young men on and off the field,” Avalos said in a statement. “His passion and energy demands maximum effort and he will get the best out of our players.”
