Boise State adds an explosive running back from Texas to its 2023 recruiting class

The Boise State football team has historically had success finding explosive high school recruits in Texas, and the Broncos may have just found their next playmaker from the Lone Star State.

Jambres “Breezy” Dubar — a 2023 three-star running back from Anna, Texas — verbally committed to Boise State Tuesday on Twitter.

Boise State has 13 players from Texas on the roster, including top wide receivers Stefan Cobbs and Latrell Caples, and cornerback Markel Reed. The Broncos also have a long list of former players from Texas, including wide receivers CT Thomas and Akilian Butler, and quarterback Jaylon Henderson.

What has convinced so many players from Texas to spend their college careers thousands of miles from home? Anna High football coach Seth Parr said it’s because the Boise State program reminds them of home — at least on the football field.

“It’s Texas-style football up there in Idaho,” Parr said. “Boise State is committed to football. They’re committed to winning, and it’s basically a Power Five program with pretty much unlimited resources.”

Dubar said his longstanding relationship with Boise State running backs coach Keith Bhonapha and the family atmosphere sold him on the Broncos’ program.

“Coach Bhonapha was recruiting me when he was at Washington, and we’ve been tight for a while,” Dubar said. “All the players were great, everyone I met walking around town was friendly and the mountains were amazing. It’s a beautiful place, and they take their football seriously in Boise.”

Dubar visited Boise State June 10-12. He spent time on campus with quarterback CJ Tiller, who committed to the Broncos in March, and fellow 2023 recruit King Miller, a running back from Calabasas, California.

Dubar also spent time with former Boise State running back Doug Martin during his visit. Martin played for the Broncos from 2007 to 2011, posting 3,431 rushing yards and 43 touchdowns, before he was picked by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2012 NFL Draft.

“He talked to me about his NFL years and how Boise State prepared him for that,” Dubar said, “and he told me to keep my head down and just keep working.”

Dubar (6 feet, 200 pounds) finished his junior season at Anna High School with 1,429 all-purpose yards and 16 total touchdowns. He posted 1,193 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns on the ground, and added 29 catches for 236 yards and three more scores in the Coyotes’ Air Raid offense.

Dubar also scored the go-ahead touchdown late in the Coyotes’ 2021 season finale against Terrell High. The win gave Anna a 7-3 record — it’s best mark since 1981.

“Our program has gone from a two-win season to one of the most successful seasons in program history,” Dubar said. “I think we’re going to be state title contenders this year.”

Anna adopted the Air Raid system when Parr was hired in January 2021. He said there was a learning curve for everybody on the roster, but it didn’t take Dubar long to adjust.

“He hasn’t reached his full potential yet, but he’s got really good feet and really good instincts,” Parr said. “He’s got the ability to elude people, but he also has the top-end speed where he can score from anywhere.”

It helped that Dubar spent last summer working with strength, conditioning and speed coaches to improve his 100-meter time from 11.6 seconds during his sophomore year to 10.63 last year. Time spent on Anna’s 7-on-7 team also helped prepare him for life in the offense.

“It has made me a better route runner and improved my cuts and my hands,” Dubar said. “I can catch the ball out of the backfield, pass block and win one-on-ones.”

Boise State running backs caught 44 passes last season, so those skills should come in handy.

Dubar also has scholarship offers from Utah, Abilene Christian, Houston Baptist, Illinois State, Incarnate Word and Louisiana Tech, according to 247Sports.
