Boise State football adds two senior analysts. One comes with an NFL resume

A pair of former Boise State football coaches will rejoin the Broncos this season.

Former head coach Dirk Koetter and former defensive coordinator Ron Collins will join Boise State head coach Andy Avalos’ staff as senior analysts. Both are expected to make about $24,000, according to documents submitted to the Idaho State Board of Education.

Analysts are not allowed to directly instruct athletes or recruit, but they can share observations about the team and opponents with coaches, according to NCAA rules.

“I’m excited to be able to bring a couple former Broncos back home as senior analysts,” Avalos told the Idaho Statesman. “Their knowledge of the game — and our program — are a tremendous asset to the young men joining our brotherhood.”

Koetter was on the sideline in an unofficial capacity during the Broncos’ practices this spring. The 63-year-old was the head coach at Boise State from 1998 to 2000. He was also the head coach at Arizona State before moving on to the NFL, where he was the offensive coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars, Atlanta Falcons and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He also spent three seasons as the head coach in Tampa Bay.

Koetter retired in January 2021 following his second stint as the Falcons’ offensive coordinator. He and his wife, Kim, moved back to Idaho last year in part because their son, Davis, transferred to Boise State after he spent three seasons at Portland State.

Davis Koetter is one of 11 super seniors on the Broncos’ roster this season, which means he is taking advantage of the extra year of eligibility the NCAA offered players because of COVID-19.

Collins was the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Boise State from 2002 to 2005, and he coached linebackers in 2001, which means he was Avalos’ position coach. Avalos was a linebacker at Boise State from 2000 to 2004, and he led the Broncos in tackles every year from 2002 to 2004.

Collins followed former Boise State head coach Dan Hawkins to Colorado following the 2005 season and was the Buffaloes’ defensive coordinator until 2010. He joined the staff at Ohio University as linebackers coach in 2011 and was promoted to defensive coordinator in 2019. He spent three seasons in that role and retired in November 2021.
