Boise State beach volleyball has accepted an invitation to join the Southland Conference
The Boise State beach volleyball team will begin competing in the Southland Conference in spring 2023.
The Broncos accepted an invitation to join the league, which also includes Houston Baptist, the University of New Orleans, Nicholls State, Southeastern Louisiana and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Boise State Athletic Director Jeramiah Dickey announced on Thursday.
As part of the agreement, Boise State will pay the conference $2,500 annually.
“This is a monumental moment for our beach volleyball program,” Dickey said in a statement. “Joining a conference immediately enhances the student-athlete experience, allowing our young women to compete for championships, and also expands the Boise State brand into different parts of the country.”
The Southland Conference Tournament champion, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Beach Volleyball Tournament this year. Seeding for the 2023 conference tournament will be determined by round-robin tournament held midseason at Third Coast Volleyball Club in Houston. There are no other regular-season travel requirements as part of the invitation to join the league, according to Boise State.
“This is an amazing opportunity for our program,” Boise State beach volleyball coach Allison Voigt said in a statement. “Joining a conference allows for more than just competing for championships.
“Having competed as an independent since launching the program, our student-athletes have yet to experience the recognition and postseason accolades that come with being part of a league. We will be able to continue with strong, regional nonconference scheduling, but this move also allows us to extend our season. I couldn’t be more excited for our team and the future of this program.”
