One of Boise State’s all-time great wide receivers is one step closer to the NFL
Boise State wide receiver Khalil Shakir is one step closer to hearing his name called during the 2022 NFL Draft.
Shakir — who was in Mobile, Alabama, last week for the Senior Bowl — has been invited to the NFL Combine at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, which runs from March 1-7. His invitation marks the 18th consecutive NFL Combine that will include a player from Boise State.
Shakir is following in the footsteps of former Boise State tight end John Bates, who competed at the Senior Bowl and combine before he was drafted in the fourth round by the Washington Commanders last year.
Boise State has had at least one player drafted for 12 straight years, dating back to 2010.
Shakir, a native of Murrieta, California, earned plenty of praise for his quick release and crisp routes during Senior Bowl practices, but he didn’t play in the game for unspecified reasons.
Shakir earned himself some draft buzz, though. The 6-foot, 190-pound playmaker was a first-round pick in a mock draft released by Pro Football Focus earlier this week, coming off the board at No. 27 to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. ESPN Draft Analyst Mel Kiper Jr. weighed in on Shakir’s draft stock during the First Draft podcast on Monday, calling him a “third-round steal.”
Shakir led Boise State and set career highs in receptions (77), receiving yards (1,117) and receiving touchdowns (7) last season, and his 15 consecutive games with at least 65 receiving yards became the longest active streak in the country. His 208 career receptions and 2,878 receiving yards both rank No. 5 in Boise State history, and he’s tied for No. 9 with 20 touchdown catches.
The 2022 NFL Draft is scheduled for April 28-30 in Las Vegas.
