Boise State adds three to 2022 recruiting class — including brothers who are legacies

The Boise State football team added three players to its 2022 recruiting class on Sunday, two of which are legacies.

Washington State transfers Cade and Jack Beresford both announced Sunday on Twitter that they are joining the Broncos. Their father, Harry Beresford, was a left tackle at Boise State in 1992 and 1993. Cade and Jack announced they were entering the transfer portal on Dec. 1.

Cade, a 6-foot-7, 300-pound redshirt junior, started the first nine games of this season for the Cougars, but he suffered a lower body injury in late October and ended the year as a backup.

He was a three-star prospect coming out of Woodinville High in Washington and redshirted in 2018. He appeared in five games over the next two seasons, lining up at left tackle in four games in 2019.

Jack Beresford — a 6-2, 236-pound true freshman linebacker — joined the team at Washington State as a walk-on last year. He did not appear in any games this season. He will join the Broncos as a walk-on, according to his father.

The first player to announce his commitment on Sunday was a junior college pass rusher.

Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College edge Deven Wright announced his verbal commitment Sunday afternoon on Twitter. Early signing day is Wednesday, and there are 20 known recruits in the Broncos’ class, which ranks No. 1 in the Mountain West and No. 47 in the country, according to 247Sports.

Wright is the second defender from the JUCO ranks to join the class, following Snow College defensive lineman Cortez Hogans Jr., who committed in November. He’s also the fifth linebacker or edge rusher to join the class, following four-star linebacker Dishawn Misa, who committed on Friday.

Wright — a 6-foot-5, 230-pound native of Clarksdale, Mississippi — originally committed to UAB in October. He is a three-star recruit and also has scholarship offers from Arkansas State, Charlotte, Kent State, Western Kentucky, Old Dominion, Middle Tennessee State and Austin Peay, according to 247Sports.

Since his career at Desoto Central High School came to an end in 2019, Wright has spent the past two seasons at Mississippi Gulf Coast. He posted 34 tackles and 7.5 sacks this season after getting to the quarterback just once in five games in 2020.

Women’s basketball: Washington State 62, Boise State 55

The Boise State women’s basketball team let a nine-point halftime lead slip away in a loss to Washington State on Sunday afternoon at Friel Court in Pullman, Washington.

Sophomore Anna Ostlie scored all 12 of her points in the first half, going 4-for-6 from 3-point range, as Boise State led Washington State 38-29 at the break.

The Cougars then outscored the Broncos 22-9 in the third quarter for a 51-47 advantage entering the fourth quarter.

The Broncos (3-6) trailed 58-51 with 3:38 remaining, but got as close as 58-55 with 1:55 to play when Mary Kay Naro and Elodie Lalotte each made a field goal. The Broncos had a pair of chances to get closer, but back-to-back turnovers ended the comeback threat.

“We had some chances,” Boise State coach Gordy Presnell said in a news release. “We have been steadily improving, and that will help us going forward.”

Sunday’s loss ended the Broncos’ two-game winning streak, while the Cougars improve to 8-1.

Lalotte scored 10 of her team-leading 16 points in the first quarter, including all eight during an 8-0 run to put the Broncos on top 12-6 at the 4:59 mark. A pair of 3-pointers by Ostlie extended the lead to 18-11, and Boise State led 24-16 after the opening period.

The Broncos wrap up a three-game road trip with a nonconference game against Pepperdine at 2 p.m. Mountain time Saturday. The game will be available on the radio on 1350 AM.
