Boise State adds JUCO defensive lineman to 2022 class; offensive lineman leaves team
The Boise State football team picked up a verbal commitment from junior college defensive end Cortez Hogans Jr. on Monday morning.
Hogans and his teammate at Snow College, offensive tackle Lisala Tai, visited Boise State over the weekend and attended the Broncos’ 37-0 win over New Mexico. Hogans, who announced his commitment on Twitter, will join the Broncos with two years of eligibility remaining.
Tai — a 6-foot-8, 340-pound tackle — has not announced his decision, but he did go on Twitter on Monday morning to thank the Boise State coaching staff for its hospitality on what he called a “great official visit.”
Hogans — a 6-3, 265-pound native of Palatine, Illinois — also has scholarship offers from Washington State, Buffalo, Arkansas State, San Diego State, Utah State, Temple and UAB, according to 247Sports.
Hogans began his college career at Northern Illinois, where he appeared in 16 games in 2018 and 2019, mostly on special teams. He was on the Huskies’ roster for the 2020 season but didn’t record any stats. He’s on a team at Snow College — located in Ephraim, Utah — that has a 7-1 record this season.
At Boise State, Hogans will join a group of defensive ends that is losing Pocatello native Aisa Kelemete, who medically retired earlier this year. Shane Irwin — a former junior college transfer himself — has another year of eligibility, though, and former four-star recruit Casey Kline is expected back. Redshirt freshman Andy Nwaoko also remains on the roster after missing all of last season with a leg injury. He has not appeared in any games this season.
Offensive lineman leaves team
Redshirt freshman offensive lineman Kyle Juergens is no longer on the Boise State football team. He has been removed from the Broncos’ online roster but hasn’t publicly announced whether he intends to transfer.
Juergens joined the Broncos as a three-star recruit in 2020 after finishing his high school career at St. Margaret’s Episcopal School in California. He also had scholarship offers from USC, Arizona State and BYU, as well as several Mountain West programs, according to 247Sports.
The native of San Juan Capistrano, California, didn’t appear in any games during his two seasons at Boise State.
