Boise State football reschedules opener against Georgia Southern; no word on Florida State

Boise State football will host Georgia Southern on The Blue after all, but the game won’t happen for nearly a decade.

The Eagles will come to Albertsons Stadium in 2028, Boise State announced on Thursday afternoon.

The game was originally scheduled to be the Broncos’ season opener on Sept. 5, but it was canceled when the Mountain West announced games couldn’t begin this fall before the week of Sept. 26.

A few days later, the conference indefinitely suspended the fall season.

Boise State’s scheduled trip to Georgia Southern in 2024 will now be the first game in the home-and-home series.

While the Mountain West is one of four FBS conferences that has postponed the fall season because of COVID-19, the Eagles will take the field with the rest of the teams in the Sun Belt Conference. They’ll play an eight-game conference schedule, and teams have the option of scheduling up to four nonconference games.

The conference also plans to test players three times during a game week. Sun Belt games begin Sept. 3 with UAB hosting Central Arkansas and South Alabama traveling to Southern Mississippi.

The Broncos’ signature game of the 2020 season — a home game against Florida State — was canceled when the ACC announced its nonconference games had to be played in the home state of the ACC school.

Boise State Athletic Director Curt Apsey said Aug. 13 that the plan is to reschedule the game, but no information on a possible date was available on Thursday.
