Boise State adds transfer quarterback from USC to 2020 roster. He can play right away

The Boise State football team added a veteran quarterback to its 2020 recruiting class Monday with the signing of graduate transfer Jack Sears.

Sears spent the past three years at USC but didn’t play football last fall, opting instead to focus on finishing his business administration degree. He joins the Broncos with two years of eligibility remaining and can play immediately.

In 2018, he served as the Trojans’ No. 3 quarterback. He made his collegiate debut against Arizona State and completed 20-of-28 passes (.714) for 235 yards and two touchdowns.

As a senior at San Clemente High in California — the same program that produced Boise State linebacker Riley Whimpey — Sears threw for 2,602 yards and 37 touchdowns and added 1,135 rushing yards and nine more scores. He led the team to the 2016 CIF State 1-A championship and CIF Southern Section Division 2 title.

Sophomore Hank Bachmeier is expected to return as the starter this fall at Boise State after going 7-1 last season while completing 62.6% of his passes and throwing for 1,879 yards and nine touchdowns. Redshirt junior Chase Cord appeared in eight games and made two starts. He suffered an injury Nov. 9 against Wyoming and missed the remainder of the season.

The Broncos have to replace former junior college quarterback Jaylon Henderson, who went 4-0 as the starter late last season and led Boise State’s only scoring drive in the Las Vegas Bowl against Washington.
