Boise State adds JUCO transfer at a position where depth isn’t an immediate concern

The Boise State football team added a fifth junior college transfer to its 2020 recruiting class on Saturday when the program announced it signed running back Taequan Tyler.

Last season, he rushed for 313 yards and four touchdowns as a true freshman at Tyler Junior College in Texas. He’ll join the Broncos with three years of eligibility and the option of a redshirt year.

Tyler joins fellow junior college transfers Riden Leong (OL), Jonathan Earl (CB), Divine Obichere (DL) and Shane Irwin (DL) in Boise State’s 2020 class. Irwin is the only member of the group who enrolled early. He arrived on campus in January and trained with the team until the Broncos suspended spring practice on March 17.

During his final season at La Vega High School in his hometown of Waco, Texas, Tyler played wide receiver and safety and helped lead the Pirates to the Class 4A Division I State Championship.

He is the fifth recruit Boise State has signed since national signing day on Feb. 5, and the 5-foot-10, 200-pound running back is joining a stacked position group.

Last fall, sophomore George Holani posted 1,014 yards, which extended the Broncos’ streak of seasons with a 1,000-yard rusher to 12 straight. Robert Mahone is a redshirt senior, and junior Andrew Van Buren had a productive second half of last season, which included posting a career-high 85 rushing yards in Boise State’s comeback win at San Jose State.
