Boise State football fills one of several positions of need with tight end transfer

On signing day in February, Boise State football coach Bryan Harsin said the Broncos had six open scholarships, and he was open to filling them.

Tight end was among several positions of needed that Harsin mentioned, and on Thursday, the Broncos filled it with graduate transfer Mason Sikes, who appeared in 30 games the past three seasons at Lamar University in Texas.

Last fall, Sikes (6-foot-4, 240 pounds) caught 14 passes for 221 yards and three touchdowns. He ends his Lamar career with 23 catches for 479 yards and six touchdowns, and he joins the Broncos with one year of eligibility remaining.

Senior John Bates is Boise State’s top returning tight end after catching 22 passes for 273 yards and a touchdown last fall.

Redshirt sophomore Tyneil Hopper was slowed last season by injuries, and Riley Smith is a former quarterback who the coaches praised as coming into his own as a route runner in the few spring practices the Broncos were able to hold.

Sikes is the third tight end to join the Broncos’ 2020 class. Minnesota native Russell Corrigan signed on early signing day, and Borah High star Austin Bolt followed suit in February.

Sikes is also the third transfer to join the program this offseason, following former N.C. State linebacker Brock Miller and former Stetson kicker Jonny Messina.
