Record-setting wide receiver returns to Boise State to coach his old position
Boise State is bringing back one of the most accomplished wide receivers in program history.
The Broncos announced Thursday that they have hired Matt Miller away from Montana State to be wide receivers coach, a spot that opened Wednesday with Eric Kiesau’s promotion to offensive coordinator.
“Matt Miller is one of the best young coaches in the — a great offensive mind and someone that can recruit anywhere in the country,” Boise State coach Bryan Harsin said Thursday in a press release. “It just so happens that he’s also a Bronco, and we’re excited to have him joining this staff. He is going to do great things at Boise State.”
Miller played wide receiver at Boise State from 2010 to 2014. He left as the program’s all-time leader in receptions (244), and was second in receiving yards (3,049) and third in touchdown receptions (29). He was a two-time All-Mountain West selection, and in 2011 he set single-season program records for most receptions (62), receiving yards (679) and receiving TDs (9) by a freshman.
“My wife and I couldn’t be more thrilled to return to Boise,” Miller said in Thursday’s release. “I thoroughly enjoyed my time in Bozeman, but an opportunity to return to my alma mater and a city I fell in love with during my collegiate career, in addition to working with a championship football program with an outstanding staff and culture, was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up. I can’t wait to get to work in Boise.”
In 2015, Miller was an offensive quality control coach at Boise State. He spent the past four seasons at Montana State, joining the staff in 2016 as wide receivers coach before he was promoted to offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2018. Last season he led an offense that averaged 32.7 points, which ranked No. 27 in the country, and 426.5 yards a game. The Bobcats rushed for a program-record 3,871 yards and made the semifinals of the FCS playoffs.
Miller’s hiring leaves Boise State with one assistant coaching position yet to fill: running backs coach. Lee Marks left that job to coach at Fresno State.
