Boise State adds a prolific quarterback from Texas to its 2020 recruiting class

Boise State picked up the commitment from a 2020 quarterback that it so desperately needed on Tuesday, and the Broncos may have stumbled upon a hidden gem from the high school football hotbed that is Texas.

Dual-threat quarterback Cade Fennegan verbally committed to the Broncos Tuesday evening. He was previously committed to North Texas but, after graduating from Woodrow Wilson High in Dallas, he went on a two-year LDS mission to Argentina. Fennegan announced Tuesday on Twitter that he “can’t wait to join the Bronco family this summer when I get home from my mission.”

Fennegan threw for 6,454 yards and 94 touchdowns and added 796 yards and 18 more scores on the ground in a three-year career as the starter at Woodrow Wilson. He flourished his junior year, finishing the season with 2,965 yards and 45 touchdowns through the air and six more scores on the ground.

The 6-foot-2, 175-pounder wasn’t highly touted by recruiting services, though. In 2018, 247Sports rated him a two-star prospect and the No. 70 dual-threat quarterback in the class. Even now, New Mexico State, Southern Mississippi and North Texas are the only FBS programs that have offered him a scholarship.

North Texas was the first to offer him, and he verbally committed to the Mean Green in February 2018, when former Texas Tech quarterback Graham Harrell was the team’s offensive coordinator. He’s now in the same position at USC.

Fennegan’s commitment fills an area of need for the Broncos. Quarterback Jaylon Henderson’s college career is over, and while neither true freshman Hank Bachmeier nor redshirt sophomore Chase Cord have publicly expressed interest in transferring, they haven’t proven to be durable thus far in their careers. The Broncos also have developed a reputation over the years for playing multiple quarterbacks.

The only other quarterback currently on the roster is walk-on Zach Matlock. Local product Andy Peters (Timberline) announced on early signing day that he’ll also join the Broncos as a walk-on.

On Jan. 3, Boise State offered a scholarship to three-star dual-threat quarterback Daylin McLemore from Junipero Serra High in San Mateo, California. He also has offers from San Jose State, Fresno State, Massachusetts, Fordham, Lehigh and Idaho State, according to 247Sports. McLemore (6-3, 195) has announced on Twitter that he also has offers from Nevada, UNLV, Colorado State and San Diego.

Fennegan is the 18th known recruit in the Broncos’ 2020 class. They signed 15 to national letters of intent on early signing day. Wide receiver Chance Luper and defensive tackle Nick Booker-Brown were the only two who didn’t sign.

Traditional signing day is Feb. 5.
