More reinforcements are on the way for Boise State’s defensive line, which may have to replace four starters next season.

On Sunday, the Broncos picked up a verbal commitment from 2020 defensive end Shane Irwin, who began his career at San Diego State in 2017 and spent this season at Long Beach City College.

Boise State offered Irwin a scholarship on Nov. 25, and he was on campus this weekend with a couple of teammates from LBCC, one of which, defensive tackle Divine Obichere, picked up an offer of his own during the visit. Irwin announced his commitment Sunday evening on Twitter.

“After an amazing official visit weekend, I’m very excited to announce that I am 100% committed to Boise State University. Cannot wait to get back out there and fire it up,” he wrote.

Irwin is a three-star recruit and the No. 18 JUCO strong-side defensive end in the country, according to 247sports. He also has offers from Liberty, New Mexico, UNLV, San Jose State and UTEP.

Irwin (6-foot-4, 252 pounds) never appeared in a game at San Diego State, and he was no longer on the Aztecs’ roster by fall camp in 2018. This season at Long Beach City College, he posted 47 tackles and 8.5 sacks.

He is the fourth defensive lineman to commit to the Broncos’ 2020 class, including three-star defensive tackle Herbert Gums, who gave the Broncos his verbal on Thursday. They join defensive tackle Nick Booker-Brown and defensive end Robert Cooper, who may be destined for a move to STUD.

Boise State defensive linemen David Moa, Sonatane Lui and Chase Hatada will play the final games of their careers Saturday in the Las Vegas Bowl against Washington (5:30 p.m., ABC). If he decides to declare for the NFL Draft a year early, STUD Curtis Weaver will end his college career in Las Vegas, too.

Sophomore nose tackle Scale Igiehon and redshirt freshman STUD Demitri Washington saw playing time this season and could move into starting roles next fall. Beyond that, there isn’t much experience.

Irwin is the 14th known member of the Broncos’ 2020 class and the second recruit from the JUCO ranks, joining offensive lineman Riden Leong. Early signing day is on Wednesday.
