The Boise State men’s and women’s cross country teams exceeded expectations at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational on Friday in Madison, Wisconsin.

The 26th-ranked men beat 14 teams ranked ahead of them to finish in fifth with 160 points. Top-ranked Northern Arizona took the team title with 46 points.

“I’m really proud of the way they went about their business,” Boise State coach Corey Ihmels said. “They knew going in that they were fit. They didn’t say a lot before or after (the race). We’ll get back to Boise (Friday night), and then we’re in a van up to Bogus (Saturday) to do our long run. We’re right back to work.”

Senior Yusuke Uchikoshi was Boise State’s top finisher on the 8-kilometer course in 14th with a time of 23 minutes, 37.0 seconds. The Broncos’ four other scoring runners were junior Miler Haller (26th, 23:48.5), senior Addison Dehaven (37th, 23:53.9), senior Jeff Lautenslager (45th, 23:58.9) and sophomore Elijah Armstrong (48th, 24:00.2).

In the women’s 6-kilometer race, No. 5 Boise State (91) ran to a second-place finish behind 2nd-ranked Colorado (80), with both teams upsetting top-ranked and defending national champion New Mexico, which ended up third (130).

“It’s a long year. It’s not even October yet,” Ihmels said. “We’ve got a long ways to go, but it was definitely nice for our young ladies to beat a rival and continue to build.”

The Broncos were one of just three teams to place three runners among the top 10.

Junior Allie Ostrander led the way in fifth (19:40.4), while freshman Emily Venters was ninth (19:58.2) and junior Clare O’Brien right behind in 10th (19:58.4). Rounding out the scoring were senior Alexis Fuller ( 26th, 20:17.4) and freshman Maxine Paholek (41st, 20:35.9).

Broncos honor Sherle, then dominate CSU

Boise State women’s soccer coach Jim Thomas presented junior forward Raimee Sherle with a glass-encased ball to commemorate her program-record 37 career goals.

Sherle then proceeded to add to her record with two goals in a 3-0 shutout of Colorado State on Friday at the Boas Soccer Complex in Boise. Junior transfer Lillie French also scored her first goal in a Boise State uniform.

Sherle is now just two goals away from tying the Mountain West career record of 41, which was set by Utah’s Amy Kofoed from 1999 to 2001.

Boise State hosts Wyoming at 1 p.m. Sunday.
