AC Boise vs. the world? Idaho will host Central American club next month
Athletic Club Boise will test itself on the world stage next month, taking on Sporting FC from Costa Rica’s top division.
The Idaho soccer club will host its first friendly at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 12, at Expo Idaho. The exhibition game comes during both teams’ regular-season schedules, putting both clubs in midseason form.
Season ticket holders will automatically receive tickets for the game. The remaining seats go on sale at noon Tuesday.
“One of the best traditions in professional soccer is global exhibition competitions,” AC Boise CEO Brad Stith said in a news release. “We’re excited our first will be with a team from one of CONCACAF’s strongest leagues.
“We’re committed to bringing high-quality soccer to Idaho and growing the game throughout the state. We’re proud to have quickly built relationships with clubs and leagues around the world and are excited to welcome Sporting FC to our hometown.”
Hailing from the capital city of San Jose, the Costa Rican squad finished sixth and eighth out of 10 teams last year in the Primera Division’s split-season structure. It has consistently finished midtable since earning promotion to the country’s first division in 2020.
Rankings teams across borders always remain difficult. But Sporting FC sits behind every MLS club and ahead of every USL Championship team in Opta Analyst’s world power rankings. It ranks the Costa Rican club as the 83rd best team in North America and the 1,316st best club in the world. Those same rankings put Boise at No. 370 in North America and No. 4,956 in the world.
