AC Boise releases its first schedule. Here are 5 key soccer games to circle

Mark your calendars, soccer fans.

Athletic Club Boise released its inaugural schedule Tuesday, setting the slate of games for Idaho’s new professional soccer team.

AC Boise will play its first game March 7 in Florida against a fellow expansion club, the Sarasota Paradise. Boise’s first three games are on the road, meaning fans will have to wait until April 4 for AC Boise’s home debut against the Spokane Velocity.

Kickoff times will come at a later date.

“This schedule is exactly what you hope for — home and away against every league opponent,” said Jeremy Fishbein, Athletic Club Boise’s VP of Soccer, in a news release.

“We’re excited to build one of the best environments in the USL at home and to measure ourselves in a variety of venues across the league. It’s a season Boise can rally around from Day 1.”

AC Boise is one of five new clubs joining USL League One, the third division of American soccer. Boise, Sarasota, Corpus Christi FC, Fort Wayne (Indiana) FC and the New York Cosmos will create an 18-team league. The top eight teams advance to the league playoffs starting Halloween weekend.

5 KEY AC BOISE HOME GAMES

  • April 4: Boise welcomes the Spokane Velocity, the defending league runner-up and its regional rival, for its home opener on a Saturday.
  • May 23: A Saturday game on Memorial Day weekend should create a packed house against Fort Wayne.
  • July 2: Reigning league champ One Knoxville (Tennessee) makes its first trip to Idaho on the Thursday before the Fourth of July weekend.
  • July 11: Sacramento FC heads to Expo Idaho for a USL Cup match. The USL Championship side was briefly set to join the MLS until a stadium deal fell through.
  • July 17: Maine’s Portland Hearts of Pine captured loads of national media attention by leading the league in attendance in its first season (5,829 fans per game). Boise gets a chance to make its own first impression.

BOISE’S USL CUP GROUP

In addition to a 34-game league schedule, AC Boise will play at least four games in the USL’s midseason interleague tournament.

Boise will play group-stage games against Spokane and three clubs from the USL Championship, the second division of the American soccer pyramid. That trio will be Las Vegas, Monterey Bay and the Sacramento Republic.

That means Boise will play 19 home games in its inaugural season — 17 league games, plus cup games against Monterey and Sacramento. The team will have four home games in a row in May and three in a row in August.
