Just last month, Gov. Brad Little signed a law that allows the state to use a firing squad to implement the death penalty when lethal injection drugs are unavailable, which is often.

Idaho is now one of five states that allow a firing squad under these circumstances.

Utah is the only one to use it since a temporary death penalty pause was imposed nationwide in 1968 and then lifted in 1976 by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Now, as the drugs become increasingly difficult to obtain, Idaho has the option of using a firing squad starting July 1, 2023.
