Thunderstorms to bring more rain, wind and a chance of snow to Boise. Here’s when

Don’t pack away your umbrella quite yet.

After a rainstorm showered Boise overnight, more rain is on the way.

“A strong cold front will move through Wednesday afternoon into Thursday with gusty winds and isolated thunderstorms,” the National Weather Service said in its most recent Idaho state forecast discussion. “This system will bring widespread precipitation throughout the state, with moderate totals anticipated.”

Winter weather driving conditions are expected along “high-elevation passes,” especially at night, the weather service said.

How much rain has Boise gotten so far?

According to Les Colin, senior forecaster at the National Weather Service’s Boise office, the City of Trees received about a tenth of an inch of rainwater overnight on Tuesday, March 31.

A cold front will bring more rainfall on Wednesday, April 1, starting around 2 p.m., Colin told the Idaho Statesman via phone.

Thunderstorms are expected to roll through the Treasure Valley by midnight, the forecaster said.

“It’s going to rain quite a bit” through Wednesday evening, Colin said. “This cold front is going to come through with heavy showers and thunderstorms.”

He said drivers should “stay away from roads near steep terrain where rocks could be knocked loose and mud could come down.”

Boise is predicted to see more than a half an inch of rain, the National Weather Service said in a post on X.

Will it snow in Boise or at Bogus Basin?

Though no snow accumulation is expected in Boise, area residents could see some snowflakes as frigid air follows the storm system, the weather service said.

According to the weather service, Bogus Basin could get 6 to 8 inches of snow as a result of the storm.

How long will storms last?

Though thunderstorms are expected to bring significant rainfall to the Boise area on Wednesday and Thursday, forecasters said showers will not stick around for the weekend.

“A significant warming and drying trend develops Friday through the weekend and into early next week as a large Pacific high pressure system builds over the state,” the weather service said in its state forecast discussion.
