The National Weather Service has issued a wind and winter weather advisory for parts of Idaho for Thursday afternoon.

The winter weather advisory affects Southwest Idaho highlands, the Owyhee Mountains and the Camas Prairie for slippery roads. The advisory is expected to last until 5 a.m. Friday morning with snow accumulations predicted of two to four inches.

The weather service predicts northwest winds of 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 50 mph, beginning around noon and lasting until 8 p.m. Thursday.

Stronger wind speeds are expected in channeled areas along the I-84 corridor near Baker City and Ontario, Oregon, along with the upper and lower Treasure Valley areas and east to Mountain Home, National Weather Service meteorologist Sophia Adams said.

“With the high wind speeds, we always just encourage slowing down if you’re traveling on the interstates near high-profile vehicles, locking up and securing anything that you have outside and just keeping fences closed, especially if you have livestock,” Adams said. “Sometimes the really strong gusts can blow open those fences or gates.”

Those wind gusts are expected to clear out by the end of the weekend, making way for warmer temperatures.

“Our temperatures will be increasing through the next several days. We are expecting a really beautiful weekend with temperatures in the 60s by Sunday afternoon in the Boise area. So get outside and enjoy it,” Adams said.
