Wind advisory issued for Boise area, 45-mph gusts predicted to hit Ada County

Grab your kites and put away your lawn furniture, Boise, it’s going to be a windy one.

The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory for Monday, with the strongest gusts expected between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m.

Winds will likely hit areas south and east of Boise the hardest, National Weather Service meteorologist Stephen Parker told the Idaho Statesman.

Parker predicted that southeast Ada County and Mountain Home will experience sustained winds between 25 and 35 mph, with gusts reaching up to 45 mph.

Boise won’t see wind quite that strong, but it could be enough to knock down tree limbs, according to the NWS.

“Advisory means this is not going to be life-threatening as long as you take basic common-sense precautions,” Parker said. “If you have an empty trash can or some lawn furniture, it might get blown around. But this is not the kind of thing that is going to take shingles off your roof or anything like that.”

Parker said the winds will be caused by a cold front moving into Idaho on Sunday night.

“Some fronts kind of just ooze on through, but then 12 hours later, the winds really pick up, and that’s what this one’s going to be,” Parker said by phone Sunday.

Conditions may also bring light rain showers on Sunday and then again Wednesday, Parker said.

Nice weather is expected to return by the weekend, with sunshine and temperatures returning to the upper 50s.
