How much snow fell in Boise on Thursday? Is more to come this week? Here’s the latest
More than 3 inches of snow fell in Boise on Thursday morning, in part because a band of snow remained stationary over the area for hours.
The official total at the Boise Airport, where the National Weather Service records snowfall amounts, was 3.1 inches by the time snow tapered off around noon. The Weather Service initially forecast 1 to 3 inches for Boise, putting Thursday morning’s final total on the high end of predictions.
“There was a deformation band, a band of snow, that set up over the area, and it dropped a little more than what our models had over the area,” National Weather Service meteorologist Korri Anderson told the Idaho Statesman. “It was pretty consistent, like 2 to 3 inches across the whole area.”
The heaviest period of snow fell from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m., Anderson said. By 9:45 a.m., the Ada County Sheriff’s Office had received 48 reports of traffic accidents — seven of those with injuries — and 11 other slide-offs. Most of the Treasure Valley got at least 3 inches of snow.
Weekend forecast … more snow?
The storm has moved out of the Treasure Valley and will continue to drop snow in the Magic Valley and other parts of southern Idaho.
But that doesn’t mean Boise is done with snow this week.
Low cloud cover and fog could envelop Boise on Thursday night into Friday, Anderson said, which will help keep temperatures cool and prevent the snow from melting quickly.
The Weather Service forecasts high temperatures to sit at around 36 on Friday and drop to 32 by Sunday. The drop to freezing will accompany a second chance for snow this week.
“It’s a little far out to be able to tell (snow totals) because it could change a lot in the models,” Anderson said. “But it looks like just about a dusting, maybe under an inch.”
