Boise under excessive heat advisory as temps approach record highs on Thursday, Friday
Temperatures in the Treasure Valley could break a record high on Thursday and will remain sweltering on Friday, according to the Boise branch of the National Weather Service.
The agency issued an excessive heat warning on Wednesday urging Idaho residents to stay cool and hydrated as temperatures climb as high as 106 degrees on Thursday.
National Weather Service meteorologist Stephen Parker said in a phone interview that the 106-degree high forecast for Thursday would match the record high set on July 30 in 2003. While temperatures will stay about as hot on Friday at 105 degrees, Parker said they aren’t likely to break the July 31 record high of 109 degrees, which was set in 1892.
Temperatures are typically at their warmest in the Treasure Valley at this point of the summer.
“We are in our climatologically hottest time of the year — the last two weeks of July and the first week of August,” Parker said. “(But) this is about 10 to 15 degrees above normal.”
A dry cold front will move into the area on Saturday morning, bringing temperatures back down to around 98 or 99 degrees, according to Parker.
“We do not see a return to temperatures over 100 any time in the next week or so,” he said.
The National Weather Service is encouraging residents to stay inside during the heat wave if possible. If people have to be outside, they should stay hydrated, use cover from shade or hats and take frequent breaks. The agency also emphasized the importance of ensuring children and pets aren’t left alone in vehicles, as the intense heat could prove fatal very quickly.
