Who’s running for Idaho’s Legislative District 23? Hear from the candidates

Idaho voters in Legislative District 23 this November will determine whether to send a five-term Republican senator back to the Capitol.

District 23 encompasses the Southwest Idaho corner that includes parts of Canyon and Ada counties — Nampa, Caldwell and Kuna in the south. Only the Senate race remains uncontested in the Nov. 8 general election.

The Idaho Statesman sent surveys to each of the Senate candidates, and their responses are unedited below.

Nampa Republican Sen. Todd Lakey will face Caldwell Libertarian Jon Basabe and Kuna Democrat Mik Lose. Lose did not respond to the Statesman’s survey. Lakey previously served in District 12, but the redistricting process — which resets political boundaries every 10 years based on census populations — placed him in another legislative district.

In a crowded field, Melissa Durrant, of Kuna, secured the Republican nomination for the House position A seat in the May primary, while Tina Lambert, of Caldwell, won the party nomination for House position B. Both political newcomers now run uncontested in the general election. All legislators serve two-year terms.
