Who is running to represent Idaho’s Legislative District 18? Hear from the candidates

Six candidates will face off in the Nov. 8 general election for three seats in the Idaho Legislature to serve District 18.

District 18 includes southeast Boise and southern Ada County. The district stretches along Interstate 84, from Broadway Avenue to the Ada/Elmore County line. All legislative seats are for two-year terms.

For the District 18 Senate seat, incumbent Democrat Janie Ward-Engelking faces Republican challenger Dan Bridges. Ward-Engelking is a teacher and spent one term in the Idaho House for District 18 and five in the Senate. Bridges is a commercial pilot whose campaign is focused on the local economy and combating inflation. If elected, Ward-Engelking said she would focus on education and property tax reform.

For Idaho House position A, House Minority Leader Ilana Rubel faces Republican challenger MaryKate Johnson. Rubel, an attorney, spent five terms in the House for District 18 and said she hopes to focus on property tax reform if reelected. Johnson, vice president at Zions Bank, said she would focus on education and the economy.

District 18’s House seat B has two candidates: incumbent Democrat Brooke Green and Republican Gregory Holtz. Green spent two terms in the House and, if reelected, said she would focus on improving and funding Idaho’s infrastructure and school buildings. Holtz, a business owner, is campaigning on eliminating residential property taxes.

The Idaho Statesman sent surveys to each of the candidates in contested races on a variety of issues, including their priorities, what they wish the Legislature had done last session and what issues they think aren’t being discussed enough. Their responses are copied below, unedited.
