Who’s running for Boise’s Legislative District 17? Hear from the candidates
Boise voters this November will decide whether to bring Democratic lawmakers back to the Idaho Capitol or seek new representation.
Incumbents for Legislative District 17 — Sen. Carrie Semmelroth and Reps. John Gannon and Sue Chew — will face Republican challengers vying for their seats.
District 17 encompasses about 52,000 residents and includes part of West Boise, bordered by South Cloverdale Road in the west, Interstate 84 in the north, West Victory Road in the south and the railroad tracks near South Federal Way in the east.
Benjamin Donovan Chafetz is challenging Semmelroth, who was appointed to the Senate seat to replace Sen. Ali Rabe earlier this year. Rabe stepped down after she moved to another legislative district.
April Larson is the Republican candidate challenging Gannon, an attorney who has served five terms in the House. Mary Ellen Nourse is challenging Chew, a pharmacist serving her eighth term in the House.
The Idaho Statesman sent surveys to each of the candidates, and their responses are unedited below. Chafetz did not respond to the survey.
