Ramp closures coming on I-184 Connector in Boise. Here’s where, when

A series of nighttime and overnight closures are coming to an interchange on the I-184 Connector near the Boise Towne Square mall.

Starting Monday, July 13, crews with the Idaho Transportation Department will block off ramps on the Franklin Road interchange for repaving, according to a news release from the department. Each eastbound and westbound ramp will close one by one over the course of roughly a week, with the other ramps remaining open.

According to ITD spokesperson Jill Youmans, the work is the first step in a larger initiative to repave a number of on- and off-ramps along Interstate 84 and the Connector.

“This type of work helps extend the life of the roadway surface and delays the need for more extensive reconstruction,” Youmans said in an email to the Idaho Statesman. “One way to think of it is like sealing a deck: Keeping up with routine maintenance helps the structure last longer.”

The nearly $8.4 million project is set to include mill-and-inlay work on ramps at Garrity Boulevard (Nampa), Ten Mile Road (Meridian) and Eagle Road (Meridian) in addition to Franklin, Youmans said. Mill-and-inlay work involves removing part of the existing roadway surface and paving over it with new asphalt, she said.

According to an ITD project page, the entire repaving project is anticipated to be complete by mid-September.

Youmans said ITD aims to do some form of pavement maintenance on highways roughly every seven years.

“With regular preservation and restoration work, asphalt roadways typically last about 15 to 20 years, while concrete roadways can last about 40 to 60 years,” she said.

On Franklin Road, repaving is set to take place from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. through Tuesday, July 21, according to ITD. Weather permitting, the work is expected to close ramps on the following schedule:

  • Eastbound off-ramp: Monday, July 13, and Tuesday, July 14
  • Eastbound on-ramp: Wednesday, July 15, and Thursday, July 16
  • Westbound on-ramp: Friday, July 17, and Sunday, July 19
  • Westbound off-ramp: Monday, July 20, and Tuesday, July 21

Drivers will encounter different detours for each closure, including being rerouted to other exits or entrances on the highway. Click through the gallery to see detour maps for each closure, or view them on ITD’s website.
