Coroner identifies electric scooter driver who died in Meridian crash
Officials released the name of the man who was fatally hit while driving an electric scooter in Meridian on Saturday night.
The Ada County Coroner’s Office pronounced Jairo Villamizar, 56, of Meridian, dead at 3:35 a.m. at the scene of a crash on West Ustick Road, between Northwest 3rd Street and North Venable Avenue, according to a Tuesday morning news release from the coroner.
The release listed Villamizar’s cause and manner of death as “pending.”
Witnesses reported seeing Villamizar hit by vehicles while riding an e-scooter shortly before 11 p.m., according to the Meridian Police Department.
“Multiple citizens, including some witnesses, stopped to render aid,” police said.
Responding officers said they seized the vehicles of two drivers at the scene who had struck either the scooter or Villamizar.
“The drivers who stayed did not know what they hit at the time of the collision, which is not uncommon,” Patrol Lt. Brandon Frasier told the Idaho Statesman in an email.
Witness testimony indicated “one or more additional vehicles may have already struck (Villamizar) prior to these two” before fleeing the scene, police said. One of the vehicles that fled may have been a blue SUV, witnesses told police.
“At this time, it is unknown if the male was struck while riding in the roadway or if there was some other event which caused him to be incapacitated in the roadway prior to being struck,” police said Sunday.
Meridian police did not immediately respond to the Statesman’s request for updates in the case.
