Traffic closures to hit I-84 in March, including one that lasts two days

Treasure Valley drivers should prepare for more nighttime closures this month on Interstate 84 from Meridian to Nampa.

On Monday, the Idaho Transportation Department announced new upcoming interstate closure dates between Garrity Boulevard at Exit 38 and Ten Mile Road at Exit 42.

During these closures, construction crews plan to erect 20 girders — structural support beams — for the Boise-area’s first “flyover” interchange at the coming Idaho 16 extension.

Once the interchange is completed in 2027, drivers will be able to exit I-84 and get onto the new north-south freeway without stopping.

ITD officials have likened the interchange to Boise’s Flying Wye, which is where the I-184 Connector peels off of I-84 west of downtown Boise.

Along with the interchange, ITD plans to open the full Idaho 16 corridor in 2027. Traveling along Idaho 16 from the interstate up to Idaho 44, or State Street, is expected to take seven to 10 minutes.

The department warned that ongoing I-84 restrictions will continue through spring, and factors like weather or other unforeseen events could impact planned closure dates.

“Drivers are encouraged to plan extra time when traveling through the area at night and check 511.idaho.gov or the 511 mobile app for the latest updates on restrictions and delays,” the department said.

Here’s what ITD said to expect:

March 10-11:

Eastbound I-84 closed from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night. Traffic will be detoured to Franklin Road.

Westbound I-84 will remain open.

March 13:

Westbound I-84 will be reduced to two lanes.
