New long-distance bus route linking Boise and Portland launches Dec. 15

A new regional long-distance bus route is coming to the Treasure Valley.

Northwestern Stage Lines will begin offering daily service between Boise and Portland starting next week. The first trip, which connects through Pasco, Washington, is Dec. 15.

The transportation company already offers daily service between Boise and Spokane, Washington, as well as other routes throughout the Pacific Northwest. The additional option in and out of Boise — and its surrounding cities — makes for Northwestern’s second route in Idaho’s capital.

“We’re always excited when we are able to provide a new route and destination to our riders,” Jacob Price, owner of Northwestern Stage Lines, said in a news release. “To have the opportunity to connect travelers with the amazing city of Portland and the Oregon Coast is incredible. We don’t take it for granted and we’re thrilled to be able to operate this new route daily.”

Tickets are available for as low as $66 on Northwestern’s website: https://northwesternstagelines.com. Sign up with your email to receive a $5 off voucher.

The new Boise-Portland route departs from the lower level at the Boise Airport. The coaches can be found at the blue sign marked: Load in the shuttle / Taxi pickup lane.

Buses will leave Boise at 8:15 a.m. Mountain time and are scheduled to arrive at Portland Union Station at 5:30 p.m. Pacific time. Stops along the 400-mile-plus trip include: Nampa, Pasco, and in Oregon: Ontario, Baker City and Hood River.

From Portland, the daily bus departs at 10:45 a.m. Pacific time, with an arrival time in Boise of 9:10 p.m. Mountain time.

The bus route is made possible, in part, by the Oregon Department of Transportation. The agency is providing grant funds to jumpstart the new service.

“Residents rely on transit to reach vital services, from healthcare and employment to education and family support,” Suzanne Carlson, ODOT’s public transportation division administrator, said in the release. “This new bus route restores access — connecting travelers to Amtrak, airports, and regional and national bus lines — opening the door to seamless mobility across the United States.”

In 2023, Salt Lake Express partnered with Megabus to begin offering daily long-distance bus routes between Boise and several Western U.S. cities: Salt Lake City, Las Vegas, and Reno, Nevada. Tickets are available at: https://us.megabus.com
