I-84 construction brings more detours, delays in Boise area. How it affects you

New traffic patterns are coming to Interstate 84 in the Boise metropolitan area — again.

Starting Thursday, crews with the Idaho Department of Transportation will begin work to shift westbound traffic back to the westbound side of the interstate between Centennial Way and Franklin Road in Caldwell. Traffic has been shifted over to the eastbound side for a year as ITD worked to widen the road, causing delays.

The work is scheduled to take place from Thursday to Saturday, according to a news release from ITD. Each evening will bring ramp closures from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.

But come Saturday, the hope is that drivers will be able to travel in two lanes on the westbound side, while crews set up shop in the highway’s center median to continue the widening. Two lanes will stay open in each direction under this new configuration, which is expected to last until summer 2026, according to ITD.

Nighttime ramp closures on the interstate

This week, drivers can expect the following closures:

  • The Centennial Way westbound off-ramp (Exit 27) will close Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.
  • The 10th Avenue westbound off-ramp (Exit 28) will close Friday and Saturday nights.
  • The Franklin Road westbound on-ramp will close Saturday night.

Each evening will come with its own set of detours, including bypassing the interstate by taking Blaine Street between Franklin and Centennial.

The speed limit in the work zone is 55 mph.

More to come

ITD began work to widen the roughly two-mile stretch of interstate in November 2023.

Since then, detours, changing traffic patterns and delays have become a near-constant for many Treasure Valley commuters.

Construction, which ITD says is on schedule to be complete in 2027, includes:

  • Widening I-84 to three lanes in each direction, plus auxiliary lanes connecting the interchanges.
  • Replacing the 10th Avenue Interchange, including removing one westbound on-ramp.
  • Building a sound barrier along Hannibal Street.
  • Constructing a traffic signal at the westbound ramps of the Centennial Way Interchange.
