Union Pacific train derails in Elmore County, sending nearly 30 cars off the tracks

A Union Pacific train derailment early Sunday in Elmore County resulted in no injuries.

The cause of the crash is unknown, Union Pacific spokesperson Robynn Tysver wrote in an email.

The derailment happened about 1:30 a.m. on the western edge of Hammett, Tysver wrote. Hammett is about 20 miles southeast of Mountain Home.

Approximately 28 Union Pacific train cars derailed. It was a mixed commodity train. One of the cars spilled steel plates, Tysver wrote.

An investigation is ongoing, according to Tysver. The track has been shut down to traffic.

The site’s cleanup has begun.
