Two Idaho residents killed in head-on, wrong-way crash on I-84 in Payette County

Two Idahoans are dead after a head-on crash took place along Interstate 84 in Payette County.

About 3:50 p.m. Sunday, Idaho State Police was notified of a crash on I-84 around milepost 12.5 near New Plymouth, according to an ISP news release.

ISP troopers arrived at the scene and began to investigate. ISP says a 79-year-old Council woman was driving east on the interstate when her Ford SUV crossed the median into westbound lanes. Two cars traveling west — a Nissan and a Honda SUV — swerved to avoid hitting the Ford, causing the Honda to rear-end the Nissan.

The Council woman continued to drive her Ford in the wrong lanes for roughly a mile until the car hit a Mitsubishi car head-on, according to ISP.

The Mitsubishi was being driven by a 25-year-old Parma woman, and troopers say she died at the scene. All drivers involved in the crashes were wearing their seat belts.

On Monday morning, ISP issued a second news release saying the 79-year-old Council woman had died at a local hospital from her injuries.

State police did not identify the two deceased women. However, the Ada County Coroner’s Office identified the deceased Council woman Monday as Barbara Swenson. The 79-year-old was pronounced dead at 7:45 p.m. at the Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise.

Following the crash, eastbound I-84 lanes were blocked for roughly three hours, according to ISP.
