Update: Wildfire outside Boise should be under control by Monday, officials say
Update, Sunday 6:47 p.m.: The Bureau of Land Management said in a tweet that containment of the Lucky Fire is expected by 10 p.m. Sunday. The fire should be controlled by Monday evening, officials said.
Two wildfires east of Boise sent a column of smoke into the sky on Saturday evening as crews worked to contain them.
The first fire was reported near Bonneville Point off Blacks Creek Road about 5:40 p.m. The second was reported near Lucky Peak Reservoir off Idaho 21 just a few minutes later.
Withing a short time, the fires merged, according to Jared Jablonski, a fire information officer for the Boise District BLM. The merged blaze is being called the “Lucky Fire.”
In a tweet about 7:30 p.m. Saturday, the Bureau of Land Management said it has “seven engines, one helicopter, three dozers and two hotshot crews” working on the fire, which is headed east. It requested aircraft to drop fire retardant on the blaze.
Jablonski told the Statesman via phone that the fire is about 50 acres and moving slowly to the east. While there is no estimated time for control or containment, Jablonski said it was possible crews could establish a perimeter Saturday evening and have the fire under control by Sunday.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. Both blazes began on BLM land and appeared to be clear of any structures.
